Guys, Which air cooler can keep my 5960X stable with 4ghz OC? I'm going full custom loop soon but I need an air cooler for temporary use for the following two months before I can complete my build. I'm interested in Noctua NH-U12S. I'm running push pull with dual 120mm Fractal Design Venturi HP fans. My case is Fractal Design Define S with three 140mm Fractal Venturi HP fans as intake and 1 140mm Fractal Venturi HF fan as exhaust. I really need an air cooler that wont block my 128gb ram and the first PCI slot for my 980ti lightning. Please help.post-218976-0-48179600-1450049486_thumb.

probably most (if not all) 140mm, and some of the larger 120mm ones.

if you're doing a custom loop soon, just get something cheap that handles it at (near) stock speeds. No point spending more than you really need (that said this is a 5960X we're talking about).

A bit off topic, but how do you have 128 gb of ram if only two slots are filled?

2 on the other side are filled. x99 has 4 slots on each side of the motherboard

Pro Tip: don't use flash when taking pictures of your build; use a longer exposure instead. Prop up your camera with something (preferably a tripod) if necessary.

Thats only 96GB though (6 banks)

But this build doesn't look complete in the picture, no expansion cards and no CPU

Yeah... there must only be 64 in there right now because G.Skill doesn't sell 32GB sticks

I don't know why people use 128gb ram, its a little extreme considering 16gb - 32gb is the norm/pushing ott

Guys this is more of a showcase build for my youtube channel and there is currently 4x16gb ram on this board. Like I said this build is not completed. Im looking for a temporary air cooler. I prefer something that i can use my spare Venturi HP 120 fans. The Nhu12s got single tower and im throwing that nff12 away and use the two venturis. Its for temporary. Will it handle 4.0 or 3.8 fine? I cant find any solution online. Also any other cooler with 120mm fans support that wont block the ram and first pci slot? I kinda want smaller cooler for showing the ram too. But still just for temporary and component testing. Ill reuse the cooler for other projects when my paycheck come for the custom loop.post-218976-0-35404600-1450053700_thumb.

I´m running X99 in all three CPU variations.

To OC an i7 5960X to 4.0GHz I´d go with an AIO for the time being. This CPU produces some heat when all 8 cores are running. An air cooler is not the best option.

No one can know what cooler you will need (not even you) until you figure out what voltage the 5960X needs to run at to be stable at 4.0.

There is no "temporary" cooler on the market. If you only need the cooler temporarily, why do you need it to run at a 4.0GHz OC? Just run the thing at stock with a $28 cooler like the 212 EVO and call it a day. The 212 can probably keep it under 85C at 1.3v, but not much higher than that.

I'm saying that 128 just to let people know ill use all 8 ram slots. Currently there are two ram sticks on each side. So just 64 for now. but ill add 64 more GB next month. And the cpu and GPU are not put in yet cuz there is no point since i dont have the cpu cooler and will have to remove the GPU anyway when i need to install the cooler. Thats why i need some ideas from people here in this forum.

I'll probably need 4.0 ghz for my usage. I said temporary cuz ill remove it soon when i need to OC and when it will be put underwater. I'll probably run it at 1.25v max for that 4.0 which is not an impossible thing to do for a 5960x. Is it possible for a NH-U12S to do 1.25v and keep it under 80°C? I'll use my spare two Venturi 120 HP fans on that NH-U12S if i need to buy one.

Id pick up a used h80i or something if you can find one cheap used if its only temporary, should keep it under control even if you overclock it a bit. Also will hold its value and you can resell if your concerned about money (which looking at your rig you are not :) )

Haha, i was giving reasons for you not having the 128gb fitted in response to a previous comment, not doubting your build (jealous lol )

Again, if you're just going to ditch the cooler why are you paying $120 for an air tower when that could buy 1) an AIO or 2) a 212EVO for 1/4 the price? A single fan tower cooler is going to perform roughly within margin of error of any other

If you already have the NH-U12S then by all means, use it and see what it can push. If you're buying it, even at a huge discount, it simply isn't worth it over nearly any other option that is much cheaper.

There's no way to know if your 5960X will be able to hit 1.25v 4.0GHz, every chip is different. Same will go for the temps, although there will be a much lower margin of error given all the Haswell-E's are soldered (~Δ5C). 80C at load should not be a hard target for that voltage, on nearly any cooler.
