New Build Feedback

Go to solution Solved by aaronstpierre,
Hi,

OK here is what I did:

CPU Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core (Purchased) $279.99

CPU Cooler Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid (Purchased) $109.99

Motherboard Asus SABERTOOTH Z87 ATX LGA1150 (Purchased) $214.99

Memory Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 (Purchased) $131.99

Storage Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" SSD (Purchased) $182.99

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM (Purchased) $89.99

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM (Purchased) $89.99

Video Card Asus GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB (Purchased) $216.98

Case Corsair 650D ATX Mid Tower (Purchased) $189.99

Power Supply Corsair 750W ATX12V / EPS12V (Purchased) $119.99

Optical Drive Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer (Purchased) $15.99

Operating System Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (64-bit) (Purchased) $93.99

Total: 1736.87

I've purchased everything. I definitely could have saved money but I really wasn't looking to do that (and I wasn't looking to waste it either). In the end I went back to the black drives and I won't RAID them I'll just keep using crashplan like I have been.

I splurged on the video card and bumped up to the 750W again well because it was $10 more than the 650 and I believe it had a longer warranty.

I'm happy that a good amount of the products I purchased came with 5 years (my goal was a long term build).

Thanks again guys for your awesome feedback it really really helped me out a lot!

Hi all,

It's been quite awhile since I built my last PC. I put this parts list together and was hoping to get some feedback.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1wQEj

My main goal was building a stable system with power and performance. I'm not a gamer (hence the low end card), but I wanted something more than the integrated graphics. Most important to me is the system stand the test of time at least 5 years.

I routinely do memory and CPU intensive operations like Photoshop & Video editing so that is important to me...

Again, any thoughts would be really appreciated!

Thanks a lot!
Aaron

Looks good! I few things though: the PSU is way overkill, 500w would be plenty, also you don't need such an expensive motherbard, since you won't be doing SLI or anything, but the sabertooth boards are made to last and have long warranties, so I understand if that's what you're after.

Yea if you not gaming not planning to do anything special get a cheaper mobo, but the sabertooth board are pretty good

Looking good, PSU go for 500-520W, it's plenty for your build ;)

Motherboard is a good choice, as it was told above me it's a quality one and it has a 5 years warranty, and in your system I imagine that's what you're after.

GPU, you can get a 660Ti for like 20$ more (195$), so you should go for that. There's also the 7870 that is around the same price range.

if you are gonna overclock, you should consider an ivy bridge cpu, they are better overclockers, since haswell is a bit grumpy.

Thanks a lot everyone for the feedback!

I'm going to:

- downgrade the PSU to a 650 (want to leave myself some room to grow and not have a paper weight hanging around).

- change the case to a corsair 650D (as the haf is WAY bigger than what I need and it will fit my cooler perfectly)

I'll think a bit more about the video card and post my new list soon!

Thanks again!

Aaron

OK here are the updated specs

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/aaronstpierre/saved/2b2u

CPU Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Combo or $339.99
CPU Cooler Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid $109.99
Motherboard Asus SABERTOOTH Z87 ATX LGA1150 Combo or $249.99
Memory Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 $131.99
Storage Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" SSD $178.99
Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM $149.99
Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM $149.99
Video Card EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB $194.99
Case Corsair 650D ATX Mid Tower $159.99
Power Supply Corsair 650W ATX12V / EPS12V $124.98
Optical Drive Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer $14.98
Operating System Microsoft Windows 8 Professional (OEM) (64-bit) $129.98

I decided to get a smaller case (but still have some room), smaller CPU, and better graphics card while also taking out half of the RAM but giving myself the ability to upgrade in the future.

Oh I also decided to use the integrated RAID controller for mirroring of my mechanical drive storage hence an extra drive...

Does this look good?

Thanks again!

Looking good, but do you really need such expensive hard drives? By the way, the ASUS 660Ti is at 195$ currently in the US, same price as your EVGA 660, so you should definitely consider that. ;)

You don't really need such a pricy PSU either, a 520W 80+ Bronze is fine. It's also okay to get more (620, 650), but you don't need 80+ Gold. There are some high quality 850W PSU at that price =P

Good choice of case, the 650D is beautiful ^^

Very good point I think I'm gonna downgrade to the blue 1TB which is about a third of the cost.

Ill check out the Asus 660ti and ill do a bit more research on the psu. Ill post again once I come up with the changes.

Thanks again!

Photoshop and AI and adobe premier for video editing. I suppose it depends on what you are doing in Photoshop but I was referring the the cpu load while video editing.

get a GTX 760 over the 660, it's around the same price, has more cuda cores and will do better with editing.

Are you heavy on After Effects? I ask because it is the only of the Suite that uses CUDA and can't use OpenCL instead.

What kind of video editing do you do? Lots of effects? Quality of footage and final renders? Length?

No don't do much compositing at all...As far as effects I'd say I'm middle of the road nothing crazy. Lot's of cutting and pasting. Most of my stuff is real life stuff so the quality is good but not top of the line.

Hi all,

I decided to go for the caviar RED drives 2TB I'll get two and that will save me about 100.

As far as PSU I'm reading a lot of negative reviews on corsair PSU's (sesonic rebrand I think). Do you guys have any suggestions? Right now I've selected what I thought was a good PSU HX650, but now I'm not sure...

Thanks!

Wow thank a lot man! But I'm sold on sabertooth tuf series board and at this point spent way too much time on each of the components that I already selected to go through all of the components that you selected for me! :)

Just curious your reason for choosing those? There is a huge cost savings so it may be worth me digging into those products...hmm...

Got the price down quite a bit actually! Thank guys! I'm still sort of worried about the PSU not for the rating but just the reviews on newegg have not been good.

Corsair has good psus but they just rebrand and don't manufacture it themselves. Fyi, seasonic is probably one of the best psu manufacturers around and is the go-tp brand for psus.

No need to spend more than you need to. This will do: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1xbPE

Since you seem to like explanations:

The kraken is quieter and better than the h100i

The mobo does what you need and is much cheaper.

The normal 840 and the Evo are pretty much the same in real life usage. No need to pay more for performance you don't experience.

Barracudas perform better than Reds and are cheaper.

The 7850 is ample for OpenCL acceleration for your usage.

350D is newer and smaller than the 650D so it takes up less space. It also doesn't use that finicky usb 3.0 rerouting thing in the back.

The cx430 is a cheap semi-modular psu that does the job.
