Is an M.2 drive worth it for O.S

Go to solution Solved by vanished,

Compared to what?  A SATA SSD?  A HDD?  If you can find an M.2 SSD for the same price/size as a normal SSD, I'd say yeah go for it, why not.  If you can't though, I suppose like anything you have to decide if it's worth it.  Personally, I think SSDs are a necessity, but going beyond that to M.2 or PCIe, etc. is probably overkill for the vast majority of people.

Edit: Nvm, please get a 1.2 TB Intel PCIe SSD.  That mobo is almost $750 CAD, so clearly you've got the cash :P

Hello Everyone!

So Im currently in a pickle, Im trying to build a computer but I wanted to know if an M.2 drive is worth it as a O.S drive. I have 0 experience with th M.2 modual at all. im getting this MoBo: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B012IBPJKY/?tag=pcpapi-20

It does support M.2 but I wanted to know if the speed is necessary. Thanks for the help!

I don't think most m.2 drives offer any more speed then you'd find on a typical SSD.

I do think SSD's are a requirement for any modern PC. My computer runs on only solid state drives.

I usually look at m.2 as a way to have less cabling. That's about it.

They're hardly that much faster.  I think you'd be hard pressed to see anything get more than 4 times faster (than a normal SSD), and that would be absolutely best case synthetic benchmarking numbers at that,

If only there was a drive that could boot that fast... Only in my dreams :(

If you combine two PCIe drives, is it RAID, or SLI? :D
