Long story short I tried to crossfire a 290 and 390 and it didn't work. Now I need to pick one.

 

Sapphire Nitro 390 OC  1100 core 1500 memory

 

Fallout 4 1440p Ultra settings with Godrays turned off and shadow distance to high. 13 mods running

Rooftop in Boston, 60-12fps depending on direction pointed.

Sanctuary, 55-30fps

 

Witcher 3 1440p ultra settings, no Hairworks.

41fps

 

Sapphire Vapor-X 290 1090 core 1400 memory

 

Fallout 4 1440p Ultra settings with Godrays turned off and shadow distance to high. 13 mods running

Rooftop in Boston, 60-24fps depending on direction pointed.

Sanctuary, 60-44fps

 

Witcher 3 1440p ultra settings, no Hairworks.

54-44fps

 

I ran Mechwarrior, Skyrim, Armored Warfare, and both cards scored similarly. But the 290 performed better at 1440 in the games above, and it makes no sense and makes my decision much harder to make. Logically the 390 is newer, has more VRAM, and should perform better since it can reliably hold a higher core and memory clock. But somehow the 290 performs better. Both are using the Crimson beta driver 15.11.1, DDU was used between the two cards. They are both using the same slot in the motherboard.

Your Vapor-X is too damn sexy to get rid of... Keep the 290, sell the 390 simply because you can get more money for it right now and wait until the next gen of GPUs comes out! It's not worth selling the 290 especially that it performs basically the same.

Not worth it.

No idea. In synthetic benchmarks it worked perfectly, but in games I usually lost fps and in a few instances stayed the same. Best guess is the memory differences caused issues.

A friend of mine is crossfiring them and he has no issues..

Fallout 4 I spent days with, best I could get was exactly the same fps with a slight increase in stutter. I tried every profile available and every Crimson setting. Some caused some pretty serious issues.

I see you guys are as split on this as I am. I'm thinking the best thing to do is put a good price on both and see which one sells first. Or put them both on Ebay and if they both sell make sure the price allows me a step up.

I'd keep the 290, the 390 should fetch a good price secondhand. No point selling the card that performs better.

Sapphire Vapor-X have some differences in the way it handles everything though - the card Bios

Actually this isn't correct. They both use different drivers, though the version number is the same the driver itself is different. I know this because I have to do a driver change between cards if I run them alone.

Im saying that when the AMD CCC (or I guess crimson) looks at your 290 it will see no difference (except maybe stock clock and that kind of stuff) than the ref 290
