Usb power surge hell

Go to solution Solved by Ialyrn,

Not really any need to repost, you just need to try a different mouse in your main rig. If the issue persists, then you obviously have a wider issue. Considering that your keyboard is also suffering issues, it is possible that your motherboard is doing something odd, or your PSU is power surging though your system. If it is either of those 2 things, then you could potentially lose multiple things plugged into your system, both internally and externally. If your computer is a shop bought prebuilt system, and if it is still under warranty, then I would suggest taking it back to the shop and getting their tech guys to look at it. If it is a system you have put together yourself, then it may pay you to RMA the motherboard and the PSU. Best just to check with a new mouse first however, as that is the cheapest and easiest option. I had an issue with my mouse disconnecting, but it was a broken cable. It was a pretty old Logitech G5 gaming mouse, and I had an even older dead G5 laying around. So I swapped the cable over (thank you Logitech for using connectors on your devices and not solder), and it has not happened since. So make sure you check the cable out on your mouse. Also check for dust build up inside of the system. If it is dusty in there, then get some air dusters and some anti static brushes and clean it out.

So I've had my computer for almost a year since last Christmas. Last month I have been playing video games and my mouse and keyboard have randomly been turning off for around 2 seconds at a time and turning back on again. It made a windows ding noise when it happened. One time when I was tabbed out of my game it happened again and this time it popped up with a message that the usb had exceeded its maximum voltage r whatever and it caused it to turn off. It turned right back on again so I shrugged it off. Today it happened 3 times in 45 minutes and I'm writing this from another computer because my keyboard and mouse won't turn on. I re plugged them in to different usb ports, restarted my computer. I plugged my mouse into this laptop and it won't work but the keyboard will. I can get my keyboard working on my custom computer if i don't have my mouse plugged in but not vice versa. I want to know how to fix it without having to get another mouse(hopefully) and also what to do to make sure this doesn't happen again in the future.I would also like to know what kind of damage this could've potentially caused. Thank you.

well... usb is fairly well protected so i am pretty sure your mobo is fine.

unplug every usb device you have, then plug in one you know that works, then just test the other peripherals one by one until one acts up.

well my mouse doesn't work and the leds on my keyboard won't light up but the keyboard works. I plugged my mouse into a macbook pro and it said to unplug the device using too much power.

how about plugging the other devices in the macbook?

if you have one of those fancy rgb keyboards, they're known to use a decent chunk of power.

you *could* hook it up trough a powered hub with a 2A power supply if that ends up being the issue.

My mouse as i said didn't work when i plugged it in. The keyboard is not rgb but it can color change a bunch. I plugged it in and the caps lock light was on along with num lock light. They flashed on and off as long as i had it plugged in the macbook

Interestingly i re plugged it back into the macbook and it says: "Please remove the device causing too much powere to re-enable USB devices. Therefore I'm not sure if the mouse is broken or if it just means that the macbook can't handle it becuase its from 2009.

NOO! If you have one of the 'fancy' keyboards that need an AC/DC adapter, there a probability. Also, are you using a USB hub?

no usb hub. My keyboard is a Corsair Rapter K40.

Well, this doesn't seem to add up. You did say you can still use your mouse and keyboard?

The leds on my keyboard dont' work now when i plug it in to a computer but it works. The mouse won't work when plugged into a computer( I tested it out on a Dell inspiron just now) to clarify

Also I have a question pertaining to pcpartpicker. I noticed some of my compatability notes that "

  • The Avexir Core Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory operating voltage of 1.65V exceeds the Intel Haswell Refresh CPU recommended maximum of 1.5V+5% (1.575V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.5V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum." So im not sure weather that would have anything to do with surges or not?
