OEM vs. Retail

Go to solution Solved by dragoon20005,

The retail version of the OS can be used on fresh PCs or DIY PCs

just that Retail box cost more than the OEM version for god no reason

Okay, so where I live an OEM version of windows 8.1 is unavailable and will be for a considerable amount of time. They do however have a copy of the retail version. I would like to know if this will work on a system that hasn't previously had windows installed on it. Or will I need to look into other ways of getting an OEM copy?

Thanks,

Hayzeon

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

An OEM version of windows is tied to a specific motherboard, and cpu. If either of these are replaced, then you need to purchase a fresh version of windows.

A retail version is supposedly linked to a specific user, or group of users, and can be used without repurchase if you change either of these, or just scrap the computer, and stick it on another one.

Hope this helps
