Root? No root? Square root :)

I recently got a new phone (a galaxy note 5)and am trying to decide whether or not to root it, I jailbroke back in the days of the iPhone 3g, but what are the benefits of rooting? What more will it let me do? Any drawbacks?

Rooting gives you even more functionality to an already very customizable OS. Since you live in the US, many US carriers have locked the boot loaders on their phones so you won't be able to root.

IMO it isn't worth it unless your phone doesn't get updates anymore. I used to root my phones after a year so that I could install custom ROMs with higher versions of Android, but it's quite a hassle and I wouldn't do it on a brand new phone.

Rooting allows you to bypass certain things and run programs that can modify how certain programs run ( stopping certain programs that call home ). the extra functionality that is useful are things like having a working firewall on your phone.
