Hi,

Im after a stable program to do both (ie 1 program),

My rig is a ROG G750JH - 32GB RAM, running windows 10, 780m 4GB GPU and i7 4700hq CPU.

I am looking to improve FPS for Arma 3 specifically.

Perfect world, if I can see a 20% stable performance overheating shouldn't be an issue as the cooling is outstanding. (I think, but I don't know about such things really!).

Appreciate any help with this.

ps. help particularly welcomed from those that have overclocked a G750JH specifically etc.

It's not really recommended using built in overclocking features or third party apps. I've done a basic overclock with my Asus overclocking utility (or something) and I had a lot of problems with my PC after that.

Yeah I get it can be a big problem and I do want to avoid that, stability is a thing with me, so this may be a non starter.

Aside from this when people overclock an Intel CPU which has turbo feature, does the Turbo increase the same?

Im only interested in running the machine for intensive gaming etc, my i7 4700HQ runs at 2.4GHz base with a boost to 3.4GHz when required, i.e im after 2.88Ghz base with a boost to 4GHz (aprox, ideally), or even better just overclock the Boost speed for when its needed.

at least for the cpu, would always go into the bios to overclock it.for the gpu something like afterburner should be fine

Its not recommended to overclock a laptop, however, you can use afterburner to oc your gpu. I dont think that cpu can be overclocked. Try bios or clockgenor intel xtu

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Yea, forgot to mention that it was only for CPU :)

Well ARMA 3 has shitty fps issue because of low server performance its not your fault and i'd not recommend overclocking laptop GPU/CPU because its gonna heatup more as i already own alienware m14x r1 so i know the consequences of overclocking laptop's CPU/GPU. Still if you wana try than try OC in bios if there is no option in bios for CPU OC than try Using Software name "SETFSB" Check if your cpu fsb is unlocked than use this software. But Its always better to OC from Bios not from external OCing softwares.

CPU doesn't support multiplier OC. So even if you could get it work with software (Intel Extreme Tuning would be the one), you could only change base clock and you can't get very far like that. Plus heat output would be much higher and you really can't and shouldn't change voltage to higher either. Just out of curiosity, what kind of temps you are getting with stress test now?

For GPU its MSI Afterburner but problems are alike. Heat output and power needs will be bigger and laptops power supply might not be enough.

I'll do the stress test and report back temps etc, what should I use todo that please?

Just running 3DMark or CINEBENCH will be enough for now. They are rather mild test. For OC stability you will need Unigine Heaven, Aida64, OCCT or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility.

And monitor your temps with something like HWmonitor, OpenHardwareMonitor, MSI Afterburner or other like that.

Unless Asus has a utility for your machine it's unlikely you'll find one piece of software for both.

For Intel CPU usually just the turbo is increased. For that you have 2 options

1. Use the 2 extra bins for the 4700HQ and possibly some bclk for an increase of approx 200-300MHz.

2. Unlock the processor for higher clocks.

Option 1 can usually be done with XTU and with some undervolting you may be able to run OC'd using less power than default clocks and voltages. Option 2 needs some firmware modification and will not work with XTU so some special software would be required and/or appropriate BIOS settings.

Results will vary but requirements are

  • Appropriate cooling
  • Appropriate power delivery
  • Appropriate power and current throttling mechanisms.

So I applied a 75MHz core clock and 400MHz memory clock GPU overclock and all is well, I used MSI Afterburner.

Big impact on skyrim (+25fps aprox) and minor impact on Arma 3 (+5fps aprox), I have been told Arma 3 is CPU intensive so this makes sense as my CPU has not been overclocked yet and even when it is it can only go so far, i.e not far.

Temps running just under 70C on full load so all is stable.

With adequate hardware that 4700 should OC past 4GHz.

Thats good to know, I will look into it as the bottleneck is certainly CPU speed with Arma 3, a difference of .6GHz should be reasonably significant.
