5820k with 970 sli

Go to solution Solved by Durrendal,

ok, tried the window mode however didn't change a things, i did overlclock my cards further and that added 10ish psi guess the game is just poorly optimized as they use only 20 percent of each gpu and cpu very strange thing indeed.

Hi all first my setup

5820k OC 4.4ghz (1.220volts with hyper 212 evo cooler),        x99-s motherboard,    16gb ddr4,

G1 gaming and reference 970 in sli,    4hhds(3tb each), 1ssd 8 fans,    1000watts psu evga g1

and now my concern, i was wondering what the bottleneck would be that would prevent me to run games at 120+fps in 1440p as i plan to get the new Asus ROG Swift PG279Q for Christmas. Do i need to invest in a better cpu cooler and go for 4.6 at 1.3 or above? if so would a 80 degrees peak temp under load be safe?

Another question i had was i was thinking of getting the 950 pro m.2, would you guys recommend it or will i see no improvement over my 850 evo?

thanks for your time,

5820k OC 4.4ghz (1.220volts with noctua nh-15 cooler),        x99-s motherboard,    16gb ddr4,

EVGA 1080 SC,    4hhds(3tb each), 950 pro m.2 ssd, samsung 850 evo 1tb ssd, 8 fans,  1000watts psu evga g1

There is no bottleneck with that CPU. The overclock is decent too. 200mhz is not much of a difference.

nope. in 1080p max is around 160 if not wrong for not so demanding games.

The only thing you should consider is that the second card will run in x8 and not in x16, which in the real world translates to roughly a 1% loss in performance (in that one gpu, not both) when talking about PCIe Gen 3.0. The CPU itself won't bottleneck you at all, it's pretty powerful.

About your second question, your setup actually looks similar to mine. I have the 850 EVO and ordered the 950 PRO. Honestly? You won't really notice it unless ou spend much time doing drive intensive tasks. The most difference will be n boot times and generally when launching software, it will be snappier. Is it worth it? Probably not for home use. Is it awesome still? You bet it is. It's all about how enthusiastic you are about your build or what kind of usage you throw at it.

ok, how come i don't get 200+ fps in 1080 if there is no bottleneck? in games such as gw2 ect

I was recently doing some testing on my friend's system with his GTX 680 and my old GTX 970. In games like GW2, even though there was CPU and GPU overhead, it seemingly capped at a specific frame rate (can't remember which). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in these scenarios, it's likely a bottleneck in the game engine or API (GW2 runs on DX9?) rather than your hardware.

What are your display settings? Are you running in full-screen mode? What's the refresh rate of your monitor? Most games will automatically cap at your monitor's refresh rate when running in full-screen. Some games will allow you to set a cap yourself either in their settings or with console/.ini commands. Try to run said game in "Borderless Window Mode" or however they call it, and check your fps then.

ok yeah gw2 is a very strange case i guess i tend to get lower than my monitor refresh rate which is very annoying i mean having such a setup and getting 45/50 fps is just depressing xD i will try the borderless thing it might be interesting to see so its possibly the api indeed i am currently overcloking my gpus to get a little more power out of them lets see where that gets me :P
