Help With Workstation GPU!

hello, im looking to invest in a quadro/firepro gpu for autodesk, inventor, and solidworks. i have no set budget, because i dont know what i need to spend, but here is what i want to do with it

 

Draw 2D/3D models

put together assemblies that are 20-25 parts

 

and here are the requirements

 

<160W TDP

small form factor

blower design

 

so what would be the optimal card for my workload?

my opinion is that it is better to get a consumer gpu as it would probably perform better for a equvilent price unless you really need features that only a workstation gpu would provide

since this gpu will be running in a VERY tight enclosure, i need the workstation gpus that run much cooler than their consumer counterparts. so reliable, low power consumption, and lowest heat output really matter to me. plus the ecc memory and ability to perform calculations with a much greater precision will be important because these models will be going into manufacturing.

A 750ti or any low end card could do that.

 

Sauce: An ME student who spends an ass load of time in Solidworks. Most of those programs are more CPU heavy if anything.

The Workstation GPUs generally don't run as cool as the gaming cards...especially if the gaming cards have aftermarket coolers. I have a FirePro V7900....it has "Fire" in the name for a reason...it idles at 60C usually and this is with me manually running a fan curve (I remember the factory fan curve runs these cards super hot). In addition to the manual fan curve, I replaced the stock thermal paste with some aftermarket ones, sanded the cooler base to a mirror finish, and changed all of the memory thermal pads to aftermarket pads as well.

 

For your use though, you really could get away with a low end or mid range gaming or workstation card. 20-25 parts is nothing at all to be honest. I think you'd need a larger assembly to make it worthwhile to me. If your CPU is on the weaker side, you'll definitely get better boost out of getting a stronger CPU. I can notice a massive difference between my 2500K and my 14core Xeon NAS CPU vs having two FirePro V7900s in crossfire pro.

 

ECC doesn't mean that the GPUs themselves will perform calculations with greater precision. That's all up to the software. It just allows it to not error out and crash.

 

If you want bang for the buck on the workstation side, AMD offers a pretty good value in comparison to the low end Quadros.
