How to make legacy software run in Win 8.1 x64?

DigitalHermit

hey there,

I need to run a really old piece of software on win 8.1 x64...

I can't disclose much about the program but it was developed around the Win 3.1 - Win 98 days... back when 64-bit was not mainstream...

I have already tried the standard methods and am about to move on to a VM that runs Win XP Pro x86, but am still looking for less-desperate methods...

Anyone know how to do this?

The program outright refuses to run on x64... even in compatibility mode...

Thanks in advance...

you need to use a virtual machine

Thought so... but I'm looking for less desperate methods if they exist as the primary user of the software falls under 'non-techie' class...

Use VMware, its pretty easy to learn and install, and its free

I think thats the best way to do it

Although if its a game there might be a fix somewhere

not sure if there is a better way then a VM for just this. sorry but i think its basically your only choice :/ hopefully someone else can find a better solution to your problem.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Thanks to the above responses... looks like I'll have to resort to running a VM... I just hope I can teach it well to the user...

I'll be using VM ware for this...

any way I can get it to access a USB Floppy drive?

yeah, just rightclick your installed OS, then floppy, then "use physical drive"

Once you have it installed on his/her computer, then only thing he/her need to do is to double click the OS he want to launch, and it should work

You can also enable fullscreen mode, which converts your computer into the virtual one, which is pretty usefull because its hard to accedantaly minimize it or something
