Hi community! I'm about to buy some components to renew/update my PC and need some advice from you: the awesome people. My main guideline was a video on the YT chann. (Holiday Buyer's Guide 2015), and plus some investigation I did on my own (some SSD comparison) I ended up with something like this:

- ASUS X99-A

- Core i7 5820K

OCZ Vector 180 960GB (recommended on the video) / SanDisk Extreme PRO 960GB (best read and write for SSD I found) / Samsung 850 Pro 1 TB (best choice but $100 more of my budget, is it worth?) / Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB (read somewhere it is the best choice for music production) / Samsung 850 EVO 500GB (x2) / Samsung 850 PRO 512GB (x2)

- 32 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM

(I currently have 500w PS, a GTX 260, Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Kingston RAM)

The main purpose would be to use for music and video production (mainly music), thus the importance of the SSD and CPU.
1) What would be your best SSD choice for my purpose?
2) And do you think that the CPU is good enough for the purpose or should I get something else?

I'm open to any thought (is the mobo good enough?) and modification/change (not listed here)! I also have one more little question: Does anyone know when would be the best time to buy this stuff? Hope I didn't ask too much, and sorry for doing the stupid questions, cheers!!

If you value speed over capacity, I would suggest the two 850 pros in raid 0. If you just want storage, the 850 pro will be an AMAZING choice, but unless you need ridiculous speeds, go with the 850 evo.

Everything else looks pretty cool.

I assume you are using integrated graphics as you have no GPU listed?

i'm building a new pc as well. Almost finished. just need a gpu, but to get back on topic, I personally prefer samsung. Ive had great luck with them but if your on a tight budget then maybe not. Havent ever tried OCZ. sandisk... well ive had terrible luck with them lol but keep in mind i havent bught a high storage ssd yet but many 512 and below

Samsung definitely has an advantage as they are the producers of everything they put into them, so they are high quality as they can do control as they produce all the parts. Their controller and process are far better than pretty much every other producer, except maybe Intel.

I have my old GTX 260 for some gaming when I have spare time! Thanks for the answer (much educational for me)!

Professionally. This would be my main PC. I have an external 4TB HD to store all the junk.

Alright, just making sure you didn't go overboard on a hobby computer.

That is a lot of SSDs... I think you can get away with doing 2 in RAID as that will be faster than any SATA SSD can achieve.

Then I guess the 2 SSD in Raid is the best option. Problem is: I'm kinda leaning to the larger size SSDs because of the amount of sample recalling I do with Kontakt (library sound program used in the software workstation) and other sources. I don't know how the DAW (program I use to work and edit sound) works with real time manipulation but having 1 TB seems safe enough to put all there (and having a HDD junkyard/backyard). Although the best option might be to distribute the libraries in both SSD. Such a dilema!

The best way I have found is to transfer unused/finished files to an external "Safe Drive". Unfortunately I'm not an expert in this field, so my word is not God. Putting them in RAID 0 will make them look like one single 1tb drive to the OS. It also gives the added benefit of doubling the SATA III bandwith since you are not confined to a single port.

That kinda solves the dilema! Just one final question: Could a 950 PRO 512 GB be put in RAID with say, a 850 PRO/EVO 512 GB and look like one single 1tb as you say? Thank you for all the your answers, you have been really helpful! (and sorry for the stupid question, you can reallly aprecciate my ignorance in this one haha!)

It's not stupid at all. I really enjoy helping people learn. Yes, they can. They will downsize to the smallest drive, but they are both 512 GB, so you should have no problems whatsoever. They will look like a single 1tb drive to the motherboard once set up.

It should only take a few minutes to set up and there are lots of really good guides out there.

I'm learning lot here! Thanks for all the advise, you are awesome! My first intuition would've that a 2.5 SSD and M.2 SSD could not possibly be compatible for Raid. In that case what would be the for setup in your opinion? Could a Raid 0 with a 950 PRO M.2 and a 850 PRO be possible, so as to sum both read and write performance (this would be my go to without hesitation)? Or would you rather suggest a Raid 1 configuration and let the 950 PRO be the master (I don't know if I'm geting this correctly), is this posible? (Do you suggest any other config.?)

I didn't realize you meant the M.2 version of the SSD. In that case, depending on the type of M.2 will dictate which would be best. If it is a SATA drive, it will be limited to SATA 6Gb/s (~800MB/s) speeds. If this is the case, RAID 0 will increase the speed dramatically.

However, if it is a PCI-E interface, (It will explicitly say, and you can always shoot me a link) it really isn't worth doing a RAID unless you have another M.2 or PCI-E drive as RAID plays to the lowest denominator, be it speed or capacity, you will be losing any benefit M.2 gives.

Is it physically possible? Yes, but it would be better not to.

Then again, it also depends what is worth more to you, as there is a potential to increase read speeds. I still stick with my initial statement though. A cheap PCI-E x4 to M.2 x4 will allow for a second M.2 slot apart from what is already on the motherboard, so long as you are willing to give up a PCI-E slot.

I'll be more than happy to answer any more questions, but I will have to leave soon, so more answers might have to wait for tomorrow.

You did more than enough to help me so don't worry! I'll do a little reasearch based on the information you've given me to finish my decision! But no worries, I'm now leaning towards your suggestion and re-evaluating my budget and maybe invest for another 950 PRO M.2 (+ PCI-E to M.2 Lane adapter).

My final build for the SDD would be: Samsung 950 Pro - Series 512GB PCIe NVMe (x2) + Addonics M2 PCIe SSD - PCIe 3.0 4-Lane Adapter in Raid 0 configuration.

Do you think this will satisfy the purpose? Is it worth the investment? Again, thank you for the answers, you've been really helpful and friendly!!

Honestly, this will pretty much match even the fastest of SSDs out there, so if this doesn't, I don't think anything will. You should see about 4-5 Gigabytes a second read speeds. Yes Gigabytes.

You should see similar performance to this.

Whether or not it is worth it is really up to you.

Alright, I get it! I see it may be way faster in speed than I initially thought but I'll make some more research to see if it's really worth for this particular setup. Either way, I really aprecciate your kind help, you've been really helpful and I'm sure some of this information will help me someone as lost as I was. Cheers!!

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry for bringing this post up!

I've been doing some research these couple of weeks and I've come with some questions and maybe somebody (don't want to bother FAQbytes anymore) can help me some more.

This is my main guideline: https://www.ableton.com/en/help/article/optimize-live-multiple-hard-drive-setup/
(which basically says to have 1 HD for system and programs, 1 for samples and libraries, 1 for audio recording and file cache (which I don't really need))

After a couple of weeks I've concluded in this setup: Samsungo 950 256GB M.2 (system) + 2 Samsung 850 500GB at Raid 0 (rest of stuff)

BUT

after reading a couple of articles I've concluded that maybe the new 950 it's not worth it for my use and that maybe a 1TB 850
EVO would be better than two in raid because of it's low resiliency issue in RAID 0.

Articles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aLW7Bk5Zgk (950 not really worth it)
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485-13.html (One SSD vs. Two in Raid)
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=263154.0 (Any noticeable diff. between 850 and 950?)

So my questions are:

- Is low resiliency really a common issue?
- Will there be any noticeable difference between 950 and 850 for the system? Or should I just take what the youtube video says?
- Should I use the M.2 slot of my MOBO anyway and buy a 850 EVO M.2?

Looking foward for a long term investment aswell, so the Samsung 850 1TB seems a good option for expanding (and the maybe the 850 EVO/950 for the system?). Thanks for all the support so far FAQBytes, I've been taking to consideration all your comments, really helpful! Cheers!
