Hey,

I'm going to be building a new desktop but I'm a bit confused and I was wondering if I could get some advice/help.

I want to use my old hard drive in my new build but I'm not sure how that'd work.. Can I still use the Windows 7 on that hard drive without purchasing another copy?

Also, I'm upgrading the system from 32 bit to 64 bit so will the OS automatically configure itself to a 64 bit system?

Thanks for your time,

Yep, your OS will stay on that HDD and any computer capable will boot from it and use those files.

A 32bit OS will stay a 32bit OS. I would recommend you to reinstall Windows, since the cleaning process is not worth the time.

You should still be able to use the old HDD with the new system unless itøs a IDE drive. Then you might have a hard time finding a compatible motherboard

Sweet, that'll save me a few $.

Umm, I got it in 2011 but it's a 2010 build (MEDION AKOYA P6110 D). It should be compatible.

Is their any way to change that :(? I would totally re-install it but that's why I'm worried about. I'm pretty sure the disc can only be installed onto this desktop I'm using just now as it's probably an OEM as I got windows 7 with this desktop.

i would reccomend getting a new HDD  ;)

I plan on getting a new HDD as I will sell this desktop after I've got all the basic parts for the new desktop but until then I want to get the new build running asap as this will be my first build. I figured if I took a few parts out of this desktop until the new one is fully ready their should be no problem.

most likely Oem. you can try calling Microsoft and tell them you upgraded hardware and had to reinstall but it wouldn't allow you too. they may let you recycle the key.

Unfortunatly you can't change the 32bit version to a 64bit version. Also when you have installed Windows you can call Microsoft and make them renew the key for you. An OEM license is only limited that way

No, your key is for a 32bit OS and that is what they will renew. if you want a 64bit OS you will need to purchase a new OS

Apparently the keys work for both :o. I'd be installing Ubuntu on this desktop on it's second HDD so Windows would no longer be installed on this desktop.

Apperently they have changed the rules since I tried this. The again that was with XP, so yeah...

Well, good thing that you could find out what I couldn't.
