Gtx 960 for 2560x1080 UltraWide

I currently have an fx 6350 at stock speeds with a 2gb gtx 960 and 8gb of ram. Christmas is coming up and i have to figure out what i want very fast but im torn between upgrading peripherals and waiting for pascal cards, upgrading my cpu to skylake with new ddr4, upgrading to a r9 390, or sticking with what i have now and getting an ultrawide 1080p monitor. Will my 960 be able to run it in modern games fine? I normally run at ultra settings with some at high. Also what would you guys upgrade in my situation? My parents will spend around $300-350, my aunt will spend around $160, and another relative will spend around $150-200.

With a 960 you would be pushing medium settings at a lower fps, so upgrade pc then buy the monitor you can run!

Trust me Pascal will kick ass, I know how you feel I'd love a 4k display but my 970 just can't handle it. In your case the vRam might be a problem 1080p ultrawide is almost 1440p so idk if you wanna risk it with that 2gb vram

A 970 can handle 4k, but not maxing out games. My 970 runs fallout 4 with tweaked settings ( ultra & low godrays w/o AA) and im getting frame rates ranging from 30 - 45. I fully agree with you though. The gtx X80 or X80 ti pascal card will be a 4k monster. Can't wait :)

My friend has 3way 1440p and 2 r9 290x's oc'ed on water cant run it past low settings...... so a 960 wont cut the mustard

Just get an R9 380/380X then save up for a new system.

 

At least it would perform better than a GTX 960 even with a 2560x1080 monitor.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

 

How I plan my builds -

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."
