Recording bottleneck

Go to solution Solved by manikyath,

I'm using fraps to record the game

OBS - https://obsproject.com/

I don't know if this is the right sub forum but anyways.

I want to record SNOW (a skiing game on steam) but somehow I can't get 30 FPS in my recording.

I think that is because of my WD green hard drive which I write the video files to.

I'm using fraps to record the game

My specs are:

I5 4690K at stock speed;

Hyper 212 evo cooler;

R9 380 4G;

crucial BX100 250 gb ssd (C drive);

WD green (D drive, fraps is installed here).

My question is: what could be the bottleneck?

Thanks in advance

To Infinity and Beyond!

Yeah, Fraps is widely known to cause frame drop when recording.

Yeah, Fraps is widely known to cause frame drop when recording.

a friend of mine used to record with fraps, one time he asked me why uploading to youtube took that long, and why he reached his data cap so fast.

200GB for 30 minutes of video...

3 bytes per pixel (RGB), 1080 pixels vertical, 1920 pixels horizontal, 60 times per second, 60 second sper minute, 30 minute = roughly 625 gigabyte worth of uncompressed data.

(ps: a quality 1080p movie is roughly 1.25GB for 30 minutes)

congrats fraps, you at least did something...

Tried OBS but got black screen in my recording, probably my fault but I will investigate that tomorrow.

Look up guides on youtube. and OBS's own site. Just a google of "How to use obs" will turn up some very helpful and detailed guides. There's a lot to OBS but you have to be introduced to how it works as it differs from its competitors.

1. Use OBS with VCE.

2. MSI Aftterburner with RTSS 6.4.0 and then configure it to use AMD AMF VCE.

WD Greens aren't really good for everyday use. They are good option for backup or media drive. But I wouldn't use 5400rpm drive anywhere. Normal WD Blues and Blacks are 7200rpm.
