Do I need to upgrade my PSU

Swiftfeather

I have an older computer with an older power supply that I couldn't identify without completely removing.

My main concern is that the power supply may not have enough juice to power the four components I am upgrading. I am doing extreme budgeting on the parts and adding a new power supply would really hurt my wallet.

This computer was built in 2011.
The system specs are currently:
CPU: intel i3-2100

GPU: Radeon 6790 HD Sapphire Pro

RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengence 1600 DDR3 2x4GB

PSU: I couldn't tell :/ (It says how much power on the side, when I get home from class I'll see if I can get some actual useful info out)

Mobo: A Gigabyte board, Cannot remember off the top of my head

HDD: 1 TB Western digital

Other: DVD drive, some fans.

(I will NOT be overclocking, I'm just interested in a computer that can actually run modern games.)

I am upgrading the CPU, GPU, Mobo, and adding an SSD as follows:

CPU: intel i5-4590 OR an i5-4690K if $$$ permits.

GPU: PNY GTX 780 TI Enthusiast's Edition OC

Mobo: ASRock H97M Pro

SSD: Kingston 120 GB SSD

I could not find flat out numbers when it came to power consumption on any of my current components or the ones I am upgrading to. If I had found them, I wouldn't be asking.

I just want to know ~ how much power my current system uses approx. and how much the parts I am upgrading with would use approx.

If the consumption on the newer parts is much greater than the older ones, I'll have to buy a new PSU.

CPU: i7-7700K | GPU: ASUS RTX 2080 Super | RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance | Motherboard: MSI M5 Gaming | SSDs: 1TB Samsung 970 Evo + 1TB Samsung 850 Evo + 120GB Kingston SSDNow + 500GB SK hynix SL308 500GB  | HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1 TB

The PSU at the very least should tell u the Watt rating.

If its a OEM PSU then its likely garbage, well its best to assume it is. So a new PSU wouldn't hurt.

Ur new CPU and GPU are both more power hungry.

Thanks, I'll look into the PSU brand tonight when I take apart the computer for case cleaning and fixing. If the brand is a trusted brand I'll come back with more info. About how much power would my new system require?

Use this site as it will tell you what wattage you need then look elseware to find a cheaper one. EBay is always a good place to find a good second hand one.

I did a quick serch for you and came up with this one on amazon new. it is howerver a G1 and I'd suggest a G2 but its a start.

600W is what Nvidia recommends for the 780ti.

You wont need all of that much wattage but its always best to have headroom so ur not running the PSu near max all the time.

550W will be plenty. It'll realistically use around 350-400W.

I've received updated information.

PSU: 530W Rosewill model no. RG530-S12

Motherboard: Gigabyte P67A-UD3-B3

550W will be plenty. It'll realistically use around 350-400W.

Are you sure? Is my Power supply trustworthy and is it enough for my new incoming setup?

And one last question I have is about this particular issue I have where the computer turns on but fails to load any BIOS, sometimes the hard drive will spin up and stuff. I want to make sure it's not my power supply shitting out on me, but I remember seeing some review somewhere about the same motherboard having the same problems as I am. I took a video of this horrendous process.

Thanks for the great help

Ooh, that PSU isn't great. Maybe look into a new PSU. You have a few symptoms of a dying PSU (basically it can't output anywhere near its rated wattage) so a new one should be considered. Check out the PSU whitelist in my sig.

What are the symptoms if I may ask? I found out that my problem is almost certainly due to the motherboard (Newegg reviews say it all http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128476

And what would be one of the cheapest, quality PSUs you would recommend?

Bump and I'd like to know how much my new system will realistically draw.  If it's just 350-400 watts I am able to get by with a 530 watt PSU until I can afford a better one, correct?
