970 or 980ti

Hi all new to the forums. Brought here by Linus' videos. Awesome stuff.

Excited to be building my next rig after 11 years. Been a bloody long time I know.

The build so far

I5-6600k

Asus VIII hero lga 1151

G.skill rip jaw V 2x8 2400

Samsung 850 evo 512

WD black 2tb

Corsair hx850i

Nzxt kraken x61

I currently have a lg 23ea63 for monitor its 60hz and don't plan to upgrade too soon as 144hz are still a tad too expensive

So main dilemma is the gpu, I'm deciding between the 970 and 980ti

I don't play FPS as much these days. Mostly RPGs and the occasional MOBA. At the moment my games of interest are fallout 4, witcher 3, MGS 5 and possibly skyrim with mods.

I've read that the 980ti can be used with DSR to achieve beyond 1920x1080 resolutions which would be nice to have I suppose.

I'm also a working adult who spends perhaps 1-2 hours 3-4 times a week playing games.

What do you guys think? 970 or 980ti?

I would say 970 for your uses. I have one and it works great. Maxes just about everything at 1080p 60 fps.

well, if you have the spare cash and planning on getting a 144hz monitor, why not upgrade to the 980 Ti

970 should be enough. Unless you really want DSR that bad then I say go for the 980 Ti

If you have the budget to spare, go with the 980ti , if not go with the r9 390 unless you plan to use CUDA or Gameworks.

I think 970 should be enough, I have one myself (the msi 970) , I have it overclocked (which is basically a stock 980) and it flies through all the games I play at ultra settings 60fps. Even Witcher 3 with pretty much highest settings (without hairworks). Older games I do play with DSR at 1440p which is nice. I think 980 ti is wayy to expensive for casual gamer like you, I know it would be for me as I play about the same ammount of time as you.

get a 970 imo, then if you get a 144hz monitor sooner than expected you can add a second 970 and sli. If its further down the line, both the 970 and 980ti will be out dated anyway so just grab gpu + monitor at that time

If you want push all sliders to the right without even thinking about performance issues, the 980Ti it is.

budget wise, 970 sits very comfortably. 980ti on the other hand brings it to the very maximum to the point of bursting

 

if my rationale mind was working i would've chosen the 970 hands down but the excited little boy in me is fluttering his eyes at the 980ti

 

i know for the 980ti Gigabye and EVGA seem to take the cake 

 

i havent had much time to research 970, any recommendations?

The Gigabyte G1 GTX970 is a very good card. IMHO one of the best GTX970 iterations ever made. And of course EVGA´s FTW GTX970 as well. Both companies have good customer service while EVGA´s customer service is known to be the best overall for nVidia GPUs.

For a 980 Ti I'd actually recommend a Zotac AMP! Extreme edition - It has the highest boost clocks out of the box of any GTX 980 Ti (1430MHz seems to be standard across the board) and that's not factoring in overclocking. I'm loving mine, and at the default fan profile it stays passive up until 65 degrees, and holds it at 66 degrees on full load consistently.

i've done the sensible thing and gone with a gigabyte 970 xtreme gaming which looks like a decent looking card and reviews for the gigabyte 970 line have been really well received

 

if i really need to i'll just SLI in the future or upgrade to pascal, who knows!

I have the red msi 970, i can't say enough good things about it. Its ultra quiet, it never went over 70c when overclocked playing witcher 3 and coilwhine is non existent when I play at 60fps which I play most of my games at. I say go for 970, it's good enough for all the games that come out these days and i bet nvidia releases some new baddass card soon so you can sell your 970 and get the new one for the difference of what you will pay for 980ti these days,.

I'd go with a 970, and also a cheaper Z170 board and cooler. 980 Ti is insane overkill for 1080p 60 fps.
