I have been sent on a mission to complete a gaming rig (workstation) by Monday night. Need help, boys

WhOaMi-Gaming
Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

So, a 4th or 5th gen i7 is what I should go for, ya?  Xeon, I dunno sounds off name brand made with china parts (kappapride).. Maybe, I am just out of the scene for too long.

How will the machine handle with photo/video editing?  Anything a high schooler might need it for

Xeons are intel's highest binned and highest quality professional chips - if that sounds like a cheap brand, gratz, you made a dumb statement. A Xeon is intel's highest end chip.

Hey, I've been tasked by the fam to build my cousin a workstation (I use that term to sound professional and uber not an actually professional workstation).

I have mouse (502 proteus), keyboard (g910 orion spark), headphones (seinheiser 558), mic (blue snowball).  I need everything else - I believe I have enough versions of Windows that I can get the X upgrade no problem.  Will figure that out myself.

GOALS:

MAKE THE BEST DAMN BEASTLY MACHINE FOR 1,000$ USD (1 small stack of 100$ bills).

He wants to "STREAM" etc he is 16 and plays all the e-sports games  as well as new single player releases.  I have no delusions of getting SLI 980 TI's so he can game in 4k for a g.

This is where I need your help.  I have been only really focused on the NVidia 980ti's and 144hz monitors for myself.  I am clueless, literally, no idea what's up in the radeon world other than that random people type the 390 is the way to go or the fury if you can afford it.

I am a huge EVGA fan but can deal with other brands.  I keep checking b-stock 980tis on their site, nothing yet.

I will need:

gpu

cpu (thinking i5 4660k whichever i5 was on new egg for 130$).

ram

mobo

ssd

hd

cable management and other things an amature like me may overlook buying

monitor (I really don't want to give him one of mine).

Not gonna get too picky with the time frame I have however, I will try to do my best the next 2 1/2 days sniping the best deals I can find.

Sorry, for rambling I was having a few beers at the pool and now I am well doing this.

Thanks for any help!

Do you hate the AMD route? As that usually will offer the same/better performance for less money.

I will be if possible.  %5BCPU%5D 4th Gen Intel Core i5-4590 - $139.00($198.99 - $59.99 -- No Promo Code) (just died not seeing the K).

Not at all.  Their new cards were not out when I built my rig and I went with a 980TI.  I just wanted a 2nd 980TI for myself to carry me the next year or so into 4k mainstream.

Appreciate the quick partspickerlist.  I have amazon prime and new egg premier (forgot to mention).  I will try to snipe deals along the way till Cyber Monday ends.  I've never tried to do anything like this so I really have no idea what value I can get.

I need to go and research these 390s. If they are stable for the esports games and hold there own or better against the 970 I can see myself getting it.

I can't see myself getting anything lower than a i5 4th gen K.  Unless, ofc an i7 is 10-20$ more.

390X=980 > 390 > 970

AMD drivers are currently more stable, believe it or not (I use both)

EDIT Xeon E3 1231 = i7 4770 - vastly better than an i5 for streaming and modern AAA games that use 8 cores or more

8 thread > "K" i5 - no amount of OCing can make an i5 as good as an i7 when you need 8 threads (modern games like Witcher 3, GTA V, MGS V) and streaming

You're doing awesome and defintely on the right track.  The problem I have is he is 16 and it does not matter if x is better than y if the rest of the world thinks y is better he will want y to achieve zxy \ a = c

quad channel RAM - I win :P

Except that those Xeon E3's don't support quad channel RAM. Might as well just go for the Dual DIMM kit and leave upgrading room.

I don't want to come off the wrong way or start an arguement but are you saying that these games require an i7 to run?  To run at max settings?  I was not aware these games were taking advantage of what the i7 could offer, still.

Guys, am I a fool if I sit around the next 72 hours thinking I will find a b stock 980 TI or similar for under 500$?  Am I a fool for even trying to hit the sales?

If I won't save over 100$ or make room for an improvement I'll just buy it now.

that is the TLDR ^^ :)

Not the E3 123x. Since it's really just a 47x0K without the ability to overclock and no iGPU.

the exact reason an FX 8350 equals an i5 in Witcher 3 is the active use of 8 cores/threads

980 Ti B-stock won't go bellow 500$ and that's overpaying for the GPU - his main need will be a beefy CPU and 16GB of RAM for streaming AAA games and such

I worded that wrong :P I meant that he had a Z97 board so he could upgrade his CPU and he had a better SSD.

Still - Asus = heresy
