macbook air has a traditional laptop keyboard layout so its better for using on your lap when typing

surface pro runs windows, has a great touch screen and is easier to use standing, or moving about but is worse for typing without a table for the type cover.

but i dont like mac os so i would never get a mac product :P

The biggest difference is the operating system. If you prefer OSX over Windows is the big question.

Basically this.  I personally find OSX to run more smoothly than Windows (used to be a long time Windows fanboy until I picked up a 2nd or 3rd generation MBAir a few years ago), especially on portable machines.

No probs:)

The Surface Pro truly shows though, if you want to use it for writing or not. Do you want to use pen input on your laptop?

No I would not be using it with the pen anyway so I think I would prefer battery life over a touchscreen display

Moved to Mobile forum section.

To answer you, both are completely different devices. You can't compare them, they are different.

One, the MacBook Air, is an ultrabook. It is a laptop, and only a laptop. A light weight portable system, but none the less a laptop.

The other, the Surface Pro, is a convertible system. It has a touch screen, it can be a tablet (a bit on the heavy side for a tablet, but you have a lot of power), it can be like a laptop. While you CAN use it on your lap, it won't be the best experience.

Basically, you should ask yourself, before we even talk about anything else:

-> Do you care about the pen? If you say no, then you can find better devices or/and cheaper in the ultrabook form factor.

The pen is what makes the Surface Pro. You can draw, sketch, write notes, annotate, circle stuff, etc. Combine typing and writing. If you are a student, it shines more, as you can type your notes, or complete your notes from imported PDFs say in OneNote, and then use the pen for math formulas, or graphs, and things.

So, then go with the MacBook Air. You'll save money, and not pay for something you'll never use.
