GTX 980 8X slot

If I were to put a GTX 980 in an 8X PCI-E gen 1.0 slot and run a single 1080p monitor would there be any issues?

Well you'd be missing out on a good chunk of performance but that's about it. It'd work fine.

There wouldn't be any issues, but you'd have a nasty bottleneck over the bus for gaming.

What on earth are you running this on?

I building a PC with Dual Xeon x5460s with 16GB RAM on an old server 771 board.  However I did just find a board that has 2 16x gen 2.0 slots.

edit: Oh I just noticed the PCI 1.0 part. Well, you might be looking into about a 15% loss of performance.
