Been checking out the AIO coolers for many years but never had any personal experience with them.

Mostly I'm interested in the H55 not necessarily for it's cooling power but more so because the fan can shut off and be silent, right?

But I've been reading that these AIO setups leak often enough that there is a bunch of videos on youtube discussing it. What I want to know is personal experiences, either first hand or second hand (like a friends build for example) of them leaking, and what is the main cause for this and how much damage the liquid does to the other components.

Thanks guys.

I've used about 40 AIO coolers since 2010 and have yet to have one leak.  The pumps have failed on a couple, but that's the only issue that I've had.

EDIT: I've used 10-12 H50/H55 specifically...since you were mainly interested in those.

People who tend to have bad experiences are more likely to speak up versus someone who has had a good experience.

Here's my anecdote: I have had my Kraken x60 for ~3 years now and it's still running just fine.

no leaks here

i've seen leaks on AiOs with clear acrylic though, like the H220/240X and raijintek triton

May I ask what damage/implications that had on your system? Did your CPU instantly over heat? Is there some kind of visual error that reports the pump has failed? How did you end up discovering that the pump failed. Also curious, are the pumps really that noisy?

The CPU will "overheat" if the pump stops, but it doesn't just keep heating up.  Your system will shut down once your CPU hits a certain temp...this is a fail-safe to keep you from damaging components and burning your house down.

Noisy compared to what? That term is subjective.

I guess noisy as in, when the fan is off due to low temps can you hear the pump? I suppose that's dependent on a lot of factors. I guess I just assumed the pumps wouldn't make any audible sounds.

Pumps do make audible sounds.  Whether it's water movement noises or you can hear the pump itself running...

I think you were misinformed about the fan turning off at low temps.

I was under the impression you could somehow adjust when the fan would come on. So if your cpu was less than say like 40c your fan would just shut off. Is that not a thing?

Using a pwm fan you can set up a fan curve/profile to your liking, but no...the fan won't shut off. You need air constantly moving through a rad. You can set to a low rpm at lower temps for inaudible operation, but the fan always runs.

Does that require a special expansion card for that to work? My understanding of AIO coolers is that they just plug into a fan pin on the mobo?

That is exactly how they work. The pump will plug to any 3pin header (so that it will run at 100% constantly) and a pwm fan will use a 4 pin header. You can control the fan via the mobo using bios or software. You could also use a controller for the fan.

Please do not attempt to control a pump through a controller unless it's a variable speed pump. You will destroy it if you do.
