So I'm upgrading my pc through the course of next year, the pc components probably coming from next year's xmas.

I was wondering how much of a difference an I7 would make, for gaming.

Almost 0% for 99.99% of games out there.

QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION!

When there is no danger of failure there is no pleasure in success.

I7 is overkill for gaming, get i5.

Sorry, should of mentioned, I'm coming from an I5 in my pc. I was just wondering how much of a difference it would make gaming and art wise.

As I can see here, pretty much no difference gaming wise.

Cheers

I'm running the Xeon E3-1231v3, and it's only slightly more expensive than an i5, and it performs very close to an i7, as it has hyperthreading. It's great for gaming (from my experience, anyway), as long as you have discrete graphics and don't mind not being able to overclock.

The difference between the i7, and the i5. The classic question, rephrased yet again by another person.

Lets start out with the basics, if that's all you want without reading several paragraphs.

The i5 and i7 perform almost identically in 99% of games, when they're at the same clock speed.

The i7 performs significantly better in professional production or multitasking processes.

Now for the more indepth answer, if you want to know more.

A thread in this case, the computer will see as a core. So 3 threads = 3 cores, 8 threads = 8 cores, or at least that's how the computer will register it.

A desktop i5 typically has 4 cores with one thread per core totaling to 4 threads, without hyperthreading, and a reasonable amount of cache for programs. Meaning that in games that are not capable of using more than a handful of threads, the i5 will not bottleneck the game, and can run it at its full potential. It's important to note that about 99% of games do not run on more than 2-4 threads.

A desktop consumer i7, like the 4790k or 6700k has 4 cores with two threads per core totaling 8 threads hyperthreaded, which the computer will register as being 8 logical cores for use. It has a higher base clock frequency, and marginally more cache for multitasking processes.

In games or programs not capable of using more than 4 threads, the two chips will perform almost identically when at the same clock speed or frequency. As soon as you start running multiple programs and put more and more load on the cpus, then you'll begin to notice differences. People big on streaming 1080p video to services such as twitch, will shoot for the more powerful i7, because it will give them more constant and steady fps, but not perhaps higher fps, due to a larger load being on the cpu for streaming. People who also tend to run private game servers for arma, minecraft or w/e on their personal computers so they can play with friends should probably also consider the more powerful i7, for once again, more constant and steady fps as opposed to the weaker i5.

Judging by how much has been spent on me this XMAS, I could probably replace my i5 with that, and still stay within the budget.

Since my mother is basically buying all these pc components next xmas, I'm buying all the other parts for gaming, and pc usuage in general (Mouse, keyboard, mosuepad etc.)

I see, as I've said in a previous reply, for the time being I won't be doing much hardcore, editing, multitasking etc. So I'll either stick with my i5 or get the "Xeon E3-1231v3" the other guy was talking about

Stick with your i5. It's not worth it to spend $280 on a Xeon processor when you are basically just getting an i7, which will also be at that price when the deals come. That $200 could go to something like a microphone, another monitor, software, or even a better graphics card.

Hmm true.

I'll just leave my CPU then. Since these xmas gifts for next year won't be coming from my money, I guess I could try and fit a microphone in there maybe? I mean the gtx 970 seems good enough as a  gpu to me.

I was thinking of getting corsair CX 750watt power supply, but some say they're just bad.

the xeon 1231v3 is a much better option so long as you have a dedicated graphics card, and do not plan to overclock. I'd easily rec. it to everyone, but people don't like xeons because of the stigma of it being a server cpu.

Unless you're a professional or just a gear wh0re, there's really no reason for the i7, or even the Xeon.

ESPECIALLY if you already have an i5.

Its an amazing chip that already does everything.
