HGST or other?

Go to solution Solved by TheMcSame,

Yeah, they can take a beating.

But if you're looking for a 3TB drive then I'd go for this tbh:

http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/3TB+Toshiba+Hard+Drive%2C++7200RPM%2C+64MB+Cache+?productId=56349&source=pcpartpicker

Toshiba's DT drives are just hitachi rebrands. Not sure which specific model it is, but at a guess I'd probably say it's a Deskstar 7k3000.

So I was reading this post on /r/pcmasterrace, https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/3tuusa/unlike_some_i_take_my_storage_and_backups_a_bit/

One of the most upvoted comments was that the Hitachi drives have some of the best failure rates out, even besting WD. What are people's experience with the HGST drives?

I've been looking for a >1TB 7200RPM drive that doesn't absolutely break the bank, and the 3TB HGST Deskstar seems like an interesting proposition. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HE7HG2C?keywords=hgst%20deskstar&qid=1448294794&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

They are extremely reliable, to be sure, especially for the price. However, if that statement was based on a report from a certain data center called BackBlaze, which will remain unnamed >_> It is ill-founded.

However, Hitachi's HDDs are widely regarded to be rock-solid. I've only had one die after being dented. But several Seagate drives I've owned have died horribly.

I've only ever had two Seagate drives fail on me, whereas all but two of my Toshiba drives failed. I've also had two wonky WD drives but someone dropped them. HGST is alright.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

The Toshiba looks good, I think I'll go for that.

Thanks for the help. :)

What's wrong with BlackBlaze's findings? I'm not arguing it, just curious.

What's wrong with BlackBlaze's findings? I'm not arguing it, just curious.

They're supposedly based off of unreliable testing circumstances, the drives weren't subjected to the same amount of operations, ambient temperature, spin-ups, spin-downs, etc... They're just generally not trusted because the tests were unscientific. They just counted how many died within a certain period and said "Hey, look, HGSTs didn't die very much! yay!"

So while their findings aren't necessarily false, they are at the very least grossly exaggerated. Some people have Seagate drives from 10 years ago. Some people have WD drives that kicked out after a month. Some have had Hitachi drives DOA. It's not a good representation of their reliability.

Fair enough, I'll take what they say with a pinch of salt.
