I plan to get an R9 380 and an i5 4690k in the near future and I was worried about my current power supply which is a CX500M, which I've read is only for basic builds. I know my build hasn't got 2 980's in it but the 380 isn't really basic (in my eyes anyway!).

Should I upgrade?

Asking questions about the Corsair CX500 on LTT is very dangerous! An army of little self-opinionated kids will zerg-rush this thread, telling you that you bought a shitty PSU which will explode and that you should get a Seasonic or Super Flower PSU!

But the reality is: it will run fine, even overclocked, just don't get freaky on the voltages if you want to be safe.

who cares...

YES!

Go for an EVGA or Seasonic PSU

I still remember this from the time i was looking for  cx430m feedback l0l

Cpu: Intel Core i5 4460 // Gpu: Asus Strix Gtx 970 OC // Psu: Cooler Master v850W // RAM: 4x4gb HyperX Fury DDR3 1866 MHz // MoBo: MSI b85 g41 // case: s340 White

as far as quality is ensured, you will be just fine. but it's always better to have some headroom which in your case is okay, but not enough. get a "quality" psu unit with at least 550W/600W just to be oversure. and if it's a little hard on your budget, then stick with your current one. it won't be as good, but will work fine.

Thanks for the feedback, I won't be overclocking my GPU at all I don't think until I get a higher wattage PSU.

Will I be OK overclocking my CPU?

You will be okay. I have done a lot of power draw tests with my own PC with various graphics cards in it. My 4670K was always overclocked to 4.3 GHz at 1.2V which I'd call a moderate overclock but still increased voltage.

With my R9 280X which i used to own, a 250W (i believe) GPU, my system was drawing 400W off the wall under absolute maximum synthetic load - not comparable to gaming. Since the R9 380 is rated at 190W, i really wouldn't worry.

who cares...

A 380 is pushing it on heat output but you should be fine on wattage. I'd still get something that's better quality of you plan to overclock.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

I'll eventually have to upgrade to a 650w but I'm pretty happy with it so far, and if it isn't going to blow up, then I'm fine!

If your system is working fine and dandy, then your system will be mostly likely fine.. and don't worry, It wont' blow up.
