CPU vs GPU :o

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

those are the games i mainly play but on the side like age of empires, tropico 4,left 4 dead 2,sleeping dogs,dayz,mw2...Yeahh do u reckon i would needa i5 for those types of games? or is it not worth the extra $100.

My answer is you'll be fine with the Core i3.

Hey so this is my build http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/ZLLz4D

Ends up being $1,158 NZD ( http://pricespy.co.nz/list.php?l=187212&view=l )

And i don't really want to spend much more so should i

upgrade my cpu to a i5 6400 BUT keep the 2gb r9 380.

or

upgrade my gpu from a r9 380 2gb to a r9 380 4gb BUT keep the i3-6100.

So yeah what type of performance am i looking at now? is that fine... or would i benefit more with another gpu or cpu.

Thanks Johnny : D

Option 1

the dual core is dead

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I'd go for the CPU.

Ah ok thanks, do games really need more than 2 cores to run well? So its worth anoth $100 for 2 more cores and 1 ghz less

Get the good cpu now, so you wont have to change it later on.

A lower end gpu will give you consistently lower performance, however a lower end cpu can give you very inconsistent performance which is much more annoying.

Not all games take advantage of more than 2 threads, but you will notice it when they do, and your cpu dosent have enough.

A lot of games came out recently that have performance issues with dual core cpus. The days of dual core cpus being decent for gaming are dead.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

They have problems with dual thread cpus, the i3 still work just fine, they just don't have the same performance as an i5, the G3258 for example has stuttering issues in some games, no matter how much you overclock it.

get a 4460. as a 4460 owner myself i can say its pretty nice. When i borrowed my bro's 980 ti HOF it didn't seem to bottleneck it much if at all if that says anything.

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

Go for a 4460 on the CPU. GPU is alright. Should be fine for ~2-3 years at 1080p.

On the GPU will the 2gb be just as effective as the 4gb in games that don't need more than 2gb....

and do many games these days need more than 2gb?

As there is only $40 them.. would it help at all? if it's just a little might aswell keep the 2gb? cause don't wanna spend more if buying the 6400

Would the i3 bottleneck the 390?

Not all games take advantage of more than 2 threads, but you will notice it when they do, and your cpu dosent have enough.

Core i3 has hyper-threading which enables a total of four threads, which is the same as the Core i5. Yes the Core i5 may be more powerful, but the Core i3 has the ability to execute four threads.

So the i3 is just as good if not better than the i5? on games like cs:go and tf2 that don't need more than 2 cores? as the i3 has a faster clock speed

No it's not better. But if you're stressing one core and the i3 is clocked higher and uses the same architecture, yes it will be the faster CPU. Once you start stressing all four cores on the Core i5, it will probably outpace the i3. However, what games do you actually plan on playing besides what you've mentioned above.
