Hi,

My grandparents sold their house in Florida and subsequently gave away a bunch of stuff. I picked up a ~5 year old HP desktop from her. Nothing special, but I managed to salvage a 300-ish GB drive (part of my RAID setup now), a DVD drive, and 4 sticks of 1GB RAM. The sticks say "1GB 1Rx8 PC3-10600U" and are from Hynix. I'm not quite sure what the speeds are on them, but probably nothing special. I put them in my rig along with 16GB (2x8GB) of Crucial Ballistix Sport, which normally runs at 1600. Will these unknown sticks slow down my other ones, and if so by how much? Is it worth the extra 2GB or should I just not use them at all?

i wouldnt say chuck them out, but 1GB sticks arent really of these days anymore.

keep the parts around for a project.

I don't need them, but if it's a free performance boost I don't see why not, until I have another project that requires them. My question was more asking if their speed would affect the performance of the entire PC that much, and from what you said they probably wouldn't.

They'll force your 1600MHz RAM down to 1333MHz. This could be noticeable in some applications.

Do you think it's worth the extra 2GB?

Also worth noting, I sometimes take out one of the 8GB sticks for a different PC so this would give my home PC still 10GB RAM, most likely for game server use.

As I said, I don't need it, but I'm asking if the benefit of the extra 2GB is more than the loss of the overall speed. If I can get extra performance, why not use it?

You won't see a benefit if you're not using the 16GB you already have. In fact, you'll see a decrease in performance by using slower memory.
