Hi guys.

My friend is in the market for a new GPU. He's running an old 760 and decided to upgrade. He's looking into a 980. He's thinking of either going with the 980 SC version from EVGA, which has a boost clock of 1367mhz, or a Gigabyte G1 gaming with a boost clock of about 1329mhz but is a bit more expensive. Around 30NZD more expensive (about 18USD) he's not into heavy OC'ing but maybe increasing it to around 1400mhz or 1450 just to squeeze a bit more performance out of it. In terms of cooling, most likely to "succeed" in overclocking, and power draw, which one would be more ideal?? es running an i7 4790k, and is upgrading his GPU to a VS650 I think is the exact name for it.

His monitor refresh rate is 60hz, is a 980 overkill maybe now but would last a bit longer than say a 970??

Also, he does not care for gameworks..........

Appreciate the help!!

I'm pretty sure Gigabyte cards are voltage locked, so EVGA.

Gigabyte

Great boards

Horrible customer support

EVGA

Great boards

good customer support

Um.. GPUs not motherboards?

Um.. GPUs not motherboards?

the GPU is on a board is it not?

The GPU itself is made by Nvidia not EVGA or Gigabyte

I always assume thats why they are called board members

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

The only gpus that are voltage locked are super low end ones, even then it's rare.

nope, this applies on the R9 3xx series made by gigabyte, nvidia side are good

The site has changed....

A 760 is only what, a year old? Even if it is a rebrand which I know a few of them were in the 700 series it would only be about 2 years old then, maybe between 2-3. So, not old but not very as powerful compared to a 980.

Go with the cheaper on. My personal favorites are MSI and Asus but EVGA and Gigabyte are pretty awesome. I say, go with either a card that matches your system or cheaper.
