Having a bottleneck? Not sure...

Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

Overclock the CPU, if your FPS does not go up, your GPU limited, and a CPU boost wont provide "much" benefit.

If you OC the CPU and your FPS rises, your CPU is holding you back... Easiest way to tell.

So I have been wondering this for a while now... Looking at the frame rate I'm getting in games disappoints me thinking that my 7950 is not running at it's full efficiency.
Yes, I did Google allot about this particular matter without any clear result.

I'm even thinking about the bottleneck being in the most impossible parts. Well.. let me show you my setup to give u an idea of what I have.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

Asrock 870 Extreme3

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB

Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD161GJ, 160GB (x2)

Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ, 1TB

Crucial m4 CT128M4SSD2 128GB

be quiet! Pure Power L7 530W

G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL

Do u guys recommend me to run any programs to determinate the problem? I do have a HD7770 laying around here as well if needed.

Thanks in advance.

Edit;

I was not quite sure where I had to put this topic, so excuse me if I did it wrong.

Driver problems maybe? I heard Windows 8 still has weird issues with games if you are using that.

There doesn't seem to be a hardware bottleneck there, make sure drivers are installed?

What kind of performance are you getting and what kind of games are you playing?

The bottleneck could be your CPU, although it's rather unlikely. I'm with CaptainFox, could be a software problem.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Shouldn't be a big issue since I'm running windows 7..

I'm 100% sure about that.

What kind of performance are you getting and what kind of games are you playing?

I'll do some benchmarks on BF3, as I currently do not have many games installed.

I'll look into that as well, thanks.

Also, OC your 7950 if you haven't already.

If you have fraps, it has a benchmarking section, which you can save to a txt file to see the run through.. Do one for Stock, one for the OC, and compare afterwards.

As your using BF3 - open singleplayer as its easier to do a mirror'd runthrough and get very similar results picking the same starting/ending point for Stock vs OC settings.

Also, OC your 7950 if you haven't already.

He's trying to know if his CPU is holding his GPU back, creating extra heat from the GPU from a GPU OC isnt needed yet until he's sorted out this other issue.

Been benchmarking for a while now, I'll post some results tomorrow with and without OC.

Went pretty smooth this evening.

Sorry for the late response, but everything seems to be working fine by now. I made a slight OC on my CPU; up to 3,6Ghz.

I still have some frame drops, but not as many as I used to have. Thanks for the advice all of u.

OC you graphics card to 6000Mhz (Vram) if posible, and get the gpu core to 1100Mhz if posible too yo have smoother frames.

The Vram OC to 6000Mhz is key to get smooth FPS. But if you can't quite get it there, around 5500Mhz is good too

And how do I know if that will increase anything? Because I prefer not to when it is not needed.
