Moar GPU driver crashes

Go to solution Solved by App4that,

I happen to already have MSI Afterburner, but have no experience overclocking GPUs, how much should I bump up the voltage by?

Max out the power limit, see how far it goes. Then add to the Core Voltage.

So, I was using 15.11.1, or whatever the newest beta driver is for the 390x, and I was getting crashes using that, so I backed off to 15.7, or whatever the newest non beta driver is, and I am still receiving crashes.

I crashed playing fucking Minecraft. Does anyone here know the most stable driver for the 390x, or some settings to look at that might be causing trouble?

The specific problem is that my display driver crashes, recovers, but fails to actually bring output back to my monitor, so I'm staring at a black screen that says no signal until my monitor turns itself off.

:|

I want it to just work. Help me make it just work, please.

Uninstall using DDU, and try a fresh install.

After that, monitor your temps and report back.

That's how I uninstalled the beta driver previous to the current one before installing the current one, and how I went about uninstalling the current beta driver before installing the current non-beta driver.

Well, how are your temps?

Never higher than 80c, and usually a good bit lower than that seeing as it's usually 0c outside, and not very comfortably warm in the house.

Btw, i presume you're using the same driver version you had before testing the beta?

Started with 15.7.1 beta when I first installed GPU, switched to 15.11.1 when it came out, went to 15.7.1 non-beta after encountering crashes. DDU used each time. I remain on 15.7.1 non-beta currently.

I do have the Intel HD Graphics driver still installed if that matters at all, but I doubt it.

Event viewer reported Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Erm, why do you have 2 different graphics drivers installed? :/

I have it still installed because I used to use it to game on while I saved money for the GPU, and when I posted on this subforum regarding driver setup, I was told to go ahead and leave HD Graphics on there as it would be fine. Also, see edit above for the Event Viewer readout.

Downclock the card by ~50mhz core clock, or increase the voltage slightly. I'd recommend using MSI Afterburner to do it.

Honestly, I thought you were better than the rabble.

You should know that that's not helpful at all, and that after getting off work for 8hrs, I want to play a game, not deal with driver crashes and morons with unhelpful solutions on the internet.

As I've said to someone earlier, this forum is a place to help people. Let's keep it that way.

First, max out the power limit. Stress test it. If it is stable, that's it. If not, then try +10mv, and stress test it. (with the power limit maxed out) If it's stable, you're fine. If not, crank it up to +20mv.

I don't know what the power limit us, so that sounds a bit sketchy. Is it safe to ramp it all the way up?

Yes, it's safe. MSI Afterburner limits how far you can go.  By raising the power limit, it allows the card to draw a little more power, which can help with stability.

It's safe, even adding to the Core Voltage can only cause issue if you disable the safeguards in place. Do NOT disable ULPS or extend the official overclocking limits without doing research first though. Stay away from those two and it's hard to hurt the GPU using Afterburner

Alright. Sounds good. I'm not knowledgeable at all about GPU overclocking and settings at all, and am therefore reluctant to touch anything, but that makes me feel alot better about tinkering with things in MSI Afterburner.

The 390/x GPUs are really good about letting you know the boundaries of the relationship lol. Try max power limit and 1100mhz, set the core voltage to 25%. I've had really good luck with those settings on them.

Alright. Set it to max power limit, +25mv core voltage, and 1100 core clock and 1500mhz memory clock. Will give minecraft another shot and see if it crashes while I puinch trees again. -.-

Edit, fuck minecraft. I hatge bench es where I have to do things. Going with 3dmark. Going to make my GPU max itself out and see if it has a problem rather than rely on a game to push my GPU.
