1080p Gaming/Work PC

Go to solution Solved by Streetguru,

I thought when DX12 will come, I could pair any GPU with any GPU, am I wrong?

a 390 is better overall than a 970 ya

But I don't think OSX supports skylake yet, at least until apple refreshes all their products with skylake/kabylake chips, but really why do you need to run OSX?

Otherwise your build looks fine, you could easily live with a locked i7 6700 though, and that way you can save money on the motherboard, as for the RAM just get whatever is the cheapest and decently reviewed, you don't need fast RAM for much of anything

Hello Linus Tech Tips community,

I'm planning to build a PC that would handle newer PC games at 1080p on one monitor and Photoshop that would also last for a long time. My PC now, was an old rig with Core 2 Duo E4600 OCed at 2,6GHz paired with a Radeon 6570 and 4GB of DDR2 RAM. For the new PC, I also plan to overclock my PC and run Hackintosh. I have a probably working build here and I want you to tell me what do you think about it.

CPU - Intel Core i7-6700k

GPU - Sapphire AMD R9 390/MSI R9 390/MSI GTX970

GPU2 (salvaged from older PC) - Radeon 6570 1GB

Cooler - SilentiumPC Grandis XE1236 (better than Hyper 212 Evo)

Case - iTek CYKLONE RED

Mobo - ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING/MSI Z170A GAMING M3/MSI Z170A TOMAHAWK/ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4

RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB DDR4 2400MHz (single stick)

SSD - Intel 535 Series - 120GB/Samsung SSD 850 120GB

HDD - Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 - 1TB

HDD (salvaged from old PC) - 160GB Seagate drive

PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 750 B2

WiFi Card (salvaged from older PC)

DVD drive (salvaged from older PC)

The main thing I dont know, is that which mobo to choose, I like the features on the ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming but it's more expensive than the MSI/ASRock ones... the thing is, the MSI ones have lesser power phases than the ASUS and the ASRock ones. Do they matter if I want to overclock my Skylake CPU?

And a side question, which one of these GPUs will be the best in gaming performance.

Thanks for suggestions!

Hello Linus Tech Tips community,

So what's your budget? What country?

And you need to pick extremely specific parts to run a hackintosh, overall not worth it

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Replace the AMD card with something Nvidia.

And use something other than a skylake cpu

And why are you planning to use a Radeon 6570 in your new pc?

cant run too different GPU's that are not compatiable

My budget is aprox. 35 000CZK (that is 1400$) and I live in Prague. And I know that for a Hackintosh I need specific parts but, I somewhere read that the R9 390 will work with the new OS X El Capitan because of the new Macbook having an R9 270 (or something like it)

Replace the AMD card with something Nvidia.

And use something other than a skylake cpu

Why? Isn't the AMD card overall better than the 970? And why should I swap Skylake with Haswell? Is there a problem or something?

Thanks for your answers!

Ok, thank you very much for your answer! Just Linus in one of his videos said, that for overclock I don't need a super, ultra MB with tons of power phases to overclock. Is that correct? Will be 3/4 phases (MSI MBs) be enough for overclock? Thanks!

Well why do you need to overclock?

You want a higher end motherboard to overclock well, but overclocking generally isn't worth the performance gain, better off saving money and getting a better X part, like a larger SSD

Just why not :D I know that 4GHz should be just fine for the next like 3 years but you know, why not :D

Because instead of overclocking you can probably use that money to get a 480gb SSD rather than a 120gb
