If you were to use your Old XP CD or 7 CD then it should be fine as the CD is a valid copy of windows.

 

Assuming the PC came with that XP CD anyway. because it will activate on the same hardware again.

I have a computer at my house that has run Ubuntu on it for years, but now I have a need for it to run Windows 7, My college offers free software including windows 7 but it is an upgrade version. My question is will I be able to take my old windows 7 or XP CD and then install not using the cd key and use the upgrade to get the full version of windows 7?

If I remember correctly, an activated copy of Windows XP/Vista is required.

There's a way to edit the registry to activate windows, when you actually activate windows all it does is tweak this registry. As long as you have a legit copy of Windows it's perfectly legal.

Wow thanks for all the feedback guys! I found my old XP CD took me a few hours lol of digging in boxes my house is a mess now :/ but it is a legit copy of windows so if all goes as planned then ill get my windows 7 when school starts Monday! :D
