What is the difference between Cherry MX*

QUOTE ME IN A REPLY SO I CAN SEE THE NOTIFICATION!

The differences are linear vs tactile (smooth press vs press with an actuation "bump"), clicky vs non-clicky and actuation force (how much pressure it takes to press the key down).

Reds are light, linear, non-clicky switches. Generally good for gaming, but not for typing.

Blues are tactile, clicky, medium weight switches. A lot of people like them for typing, and are also okay for gaming.

Browns are essentially a non-clicky blue switch, but a little lighter. Good for gaming and typing.

Personally, I like browns (would prefer clears, which are like a heavier brown, but they're hard to find) as they're good for both typing and gaming, and don't have the annoying (IMO) clicky sound.

As already linked, this is a good place to learn about them. http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2012/12/an-introduction-to-cherry-mx-mechanical-switches/

Which you prefer will come down to personal preference, and I'd advise trying different switches out if you have a chance.

Ya know, I've always wondered this myself, thanks for sharing this information. :) You're just so full of knowledge, give me your brain. Always helping me out with everything even unintentionally. Lol...

So Browns are a quieter yet tactile/bumpy feel? And clears are like browns but a heavier key? Heavier press?

I guess I'd have to type on a brown to decide if I wanted a clear, but you've defiantly helped me with deciding on what mechanical keyboard to go with in the future.

Yeah, browns have the tactile bump, but don't click like blues do. Clears are quite a bit heavier, which is good if you make typos quite a lot.

I tend to bottom out each key press, so heavier switches would be good to stop accidental double presses. Heavier keys aren't that great for gaming, though. Clears are pretty rare, I wish more companies would use them.

I see, maybe I'll start off with a mx brown switch then.

Red for quicker response.

Anything else is based on preference.

Red has "quicker response"? Are you reffering to Input lag? If so no... Are you reffering to how quickly you can press the swtiches? No youre wrong again thats a prefrence...

You're talking about your own post right?

Personally I find red horrible because it's so light. It's down to preference, there isn't a "better" switch.

For "gaming" you could have ANY switch. I'd game on clears or even something heavier. It strengthens your fingers so you don't end up feeling the weight.

I'm currently using browns, coming from blacks. Blacks are similar to reds, but are much heavier so you can feel some resistance. Browns are a bit lighter than blacks, but have a satisfying bump when they activate before bottoming out.

What's cool is you can build switches from parts of others. For example you'll get something pretty close to an MX Green if you use the body of a blue and the spring of a black/clear

My two cents:
I've chosen between brown and blues, and i prefer the blues.

The difference between them are not that big, but i preferred the blues, due to the tactile click, on top of the tactile sound. Both giving me good sense of what i'm typing.

In a blind test, i would have a hard time telling the difference between blues and browns if i couldn't hear. So if you don't feel like having a noisy keyboard, and stand between browns/blues, definitely go for browns. If you want the clicky sounds, go with the blues.

I can't comment on reds etc. as i haven't spent much time with them.

But reds are linear, and have a smaller travel time, so they are in theory faster for gaming. But the early actuation point makes it a lot easier to spam the reds, than the tactile switches.

When in doubt: C4

True, but I think the different switches benefit on the type of game you are playing.  In theory wouldn't reds be better for hack and slash games like Ninja Gaiden Yaiba and competitive FPS games?  While, blues might be better for RTS and MOBAs?  Or, would that depend on the speed and pref of the player?

I play all my games on Cherry MX Blue switches, but you need to click hard and fast, which Is something I do, If your touch Is very soft you might get stuck on that "bump" which I dont beacuse when I type and play or do anything on a keyboard, wether It Is or Isnt mechanical, I click pretty hard :P
