HDD cutting out!

I built a pc around a year ago now, and had been passed a second hand ssd and hhd, the ssd holds all my data, as the hdd cuts out when I try to save anything. I don't know much about hardware and was on the verge of buying a new hdd as the old one has nothing stored on it however i wonderd if there was anything i could do, or maybe its not related to the hhd, maybe a sata cable or port ( but the board was new when installed, the cable was second hand though! )

Hey there Broken_Duck,

As @Enderman I would also suggest that you do a diagnostic test on your drive and see if it's performing properly at all. the manufacturer of the drive should have a free tool on their website that you can use. Check and see if the drive passes the tests. The tool that Enderman suggested can give you the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status which provide a more detailed info on the drive's health. If you are not sure how to read them feel free to post them here. :)
What's the drive's brand and model?

It shouldn't matter if the drive is a regular WD Red or a WD Red Pro. If you post the drive's model I can give you further details about it.
Here's a link to WD's diagnostic tool - WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=XwIeuP . Run it and see if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. :)
