R9 390 or Gtx 970?

b3rt1l

SO i will upgrade my system at christmas. I will most likely get a 850W Evga PSU for upgradeability. But, I don't know what graphics card to get. I will be gaming at 1080p whilst playing games like War Thunder, World of Tanks, Payday 2 and Rocket League. Should I get something not as high end? Or something better? And what brand?

Thanks in advance :D

Running a Strix 750 Ti btw

750 Ti is a cracking little card!

If the games aren't that demanding, you could probably go with a cheaper GPU like the R9 380. But I've only had experience with Rocket League, so I'm in no real position to comment on how they perform.

I would get whatever is cheapest, this will depend on your region. For example, in New Zealand, the GTX 960 is WAY cheaper than the R9 380.

If they're the same price, I'd go R9 390. That 8GB of VRAM will be a God send when/if you decide to Xfire and/or go high res. Else, get whichever is cheapest.

Also, don't get too involved in manufacturer features. I barely use any of Nvidia's fancy-pants features, and the one I do use I fucking hate, being GeForce Experience.

Why stay away from 390 Strix? Or the Gigabyte?

Gigabyte and Asus cards when it comes to NVIDIA is just fine, but their quality on AMD cards seems rather sub par, would recommend Sapphire or MSI, even tho my MSI card sucked, seems like i was just unlucky :)

I like overclocking so would the Evga GTX 970 FTW+ be a good choice?

Or would I be better of with like a Gtx 950 or 960 FTW edition?

Overclocking a 970: Go with Gigabyte G1 and nothing else.

A 390 has a little bit of more raw power, but get whatever it's cheaper.

950 is far too weak to be considered with your budget.

960 is a waste of space

Would the newly realeased 380X be an option if I could get my hands on one? If i feel the R9 390 or GTX 970 is too expensive, but want more power than the 380 or 960?

Just kidding. Watched a review and it seems like the 390 is a better option..
