R9 390 or Gtx 970?

b3rt1l

SO i will upgrade my system at christmas. I will most likely get a 850W Evga PSU for upgradeability. But, I don't know what graphics card to get. I will be gaming at 1080p whilst playing games like War Thunder, World of Tanks, Payday 2 and Rocket League. Should I get something not as high end? Or something better? And what brand?

Thanks in advance :D

Running a Strix 750 Ti btw

Hey we got the same GPU :)

390 can be a bit better than 970 in games that can utilize more than 4gigs of VRAM

Id recommend the 390. I'm not a fanboy or anything but I had the same question and ended up getting the 390 and have been very happy with how it has performed.

I would say the 970. But I have a amd card atm and want my dick up nvidia's ass so bad I would almost..... best stop there.

They both perform in roughly 5% of each other stock for stock. Get whichever is cheaper.

EVGA B-Stock 970's are 250$...

Well, since you said World Of Tanks & War Thunder, i'd get a GTX 970.

War Thunder just got hit with a big update with Nvidia special effects, so it'd benefit a fair bit tbh. As for World Of Tanks, the game engine is old and shit, so it's more down to your cpu.

I don't understand what you having an AMD card and wanting your dick up some company's ass has anything to do with anything.

...The 390 is better in nearly every way and there's almost no reason to recommend the 970 at this point. It's as simple as that.

For raw performance? Probably the R9 390.

But, with NViDiA's 970, you get the fancy GameWorks in games. It's mostly your choice; the R9 390 isn't that better than the 970.

I'm fairly confident that with a 390 he'll be just fine.

I play WT a ton and with my 290X it performs no different than it did before the new engine. Well over 60fps and IIRC well over 100fps most of the time. I honestly think that you only have to worry about that issue if you've got a low end card, which the 390 is not.

Aye but he'd be missing out on all those extra effects. It's quite noticeable in War Thunder tbh.

Yep, that's true. But why your at it just say it to my windows 10 AMD hd audio drivers that still haven't been fixed. They would love to hear it :)

War Thunder is best played with low settings if you want to be competitive. High settings are a handicap since lower settings players can see you but you can't see them.

You can't go wrong with either card OP, but bigger is better and the 390 is bigger.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Erm, not sure if you are aware but grass and bushes now render on all settings and can no longer be disabled.

R9 390 has more performance at a cheaper price.

So that.

That really depends on the country, for example in Denmark the 970 is quite a bit cheaper than the 390.

I would get which ever one is cheaper, if you go for 390 i would stay clear of Gigabyte and Asus tho.

But what brand? I kinda like the look of the GTX 970 G1 Gaming from gigabyte. But the R9 390 Strix from Asus also looks nice. I want a card that overclocks well and stays relativly quiet. I am ready to give up noise for performance if i overclock. My Asus Strix 750 Ti is running awesomly well so i'm leaning towards a Strix card. But what would be best?

If you want cool and quiet Asus and Gigabyte are the worst possible options - Asus' 970 has a 3+1 phase design meaning that it is by far the worst power delivery on a 970 in existance - the next worst one is 6+2 so it's literally twice as bad.

The Gigabtye 970/980 cards have a 50% rate of coil whine so I'd be mindful of that

Sapphire 390 on the other hand, is cool, quiet and looks the part as well

Asus and Gigabyte, Asus in particular, have hit rock bottom with all but the RoG series. Stay away if you value your card
