Posted November 12, 2015 Hey guys I'm doing a temporary (about 4-5 days) setup outdoors with 200M of standard MM Fibre optic cable, will it be capable of surviving that length of time outdoors. I'm looking at fibre like this http://www.amazon.com/Multimode-Duplex-Fiber-Optic-Cable/dp/B006KYLNQ0 I know there is durable/rugged fibre optic cable such as the Neutrik opticalCon Duo cable but its around 3 to 4 thousand dollars and the adapters another $800 How durable is standard fibre optic cable. What do you guys think Thanks Ian Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/483531-fibre-optic-cable-durability/ Share on other sites
 Posted November 12, 2015 Completely not weather rated at all. Newer 50 micron fibre (OM3/OM4) cables can be semi porous, shine a light down one and give it a bend. You will soon see light start to bleed through the cable, this is due to the way they are made to help reduce the chance of kinks when over bent. Rather than spending big on outdoor weather rated fibre cables what about installing ducting/capping? Edit: Just keeping it off the round and covered/protected from rain and you will be fine, I also wouldn't want to drop large chunks of cash at temporary cabling.
