Hey guys

I'm doing a temporary (about 4-5 days) setup outdoors with 200M of standard MM Fibre optic cable, will it be capable of surviving that length of time outdoors.

I'm looking at fibre like this http://www.amazon.com/Multimode-Duplex-Fiber-Optic-Cable/dp/B006KYLNQ0

I know there is durable/rugged fibre optic cable such as the Neutrik opticalCon Duo cable but its around 3 to 4 thousand dollars and the adapters another $800

How durable is standard fibre optic cable.

What do you guys think

Thanks

Ian

Completely not weather rated at all. Newer 50 micron fibre (OM3/OM4) cables can be semi porous, shine a light down one and give it a bend. You will soon see light start to bleed through the cable, this is due to the way they are made to help reduce the chance of kinks when over bent.

Rather than spending big on outdoor weather rated fibre cables what about installing ducting/capping?

Edit: Just keeping it off the round and covered/protected from rain and you will be fine, I also wouldn't want to drop large chunks of cash at temporary cabling.

Maybe put the fiber cable is a housing? which can withstand outdoors?

I'm going to assume you are thinking of fiber because of the distance. Truth be told you can easily make those 200m with a CAT5/6.

This should help: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SDFFZZY/

Would love to see some proof about a single cat5 cable

I'd say that it depends on where you put it, how you treat it and the weather.

If it's going to be a straight run over grass and the weather is good; go for it.

But that cable that you linked to is insanely expensive. I checked out the price for 200m of the exact same OM2 SC-SC multimode on FibreStore and it's showing up as $52 USD.

Does it have to be fibre? Why not Ubiquiti ToughCable

If OP really needs the 200 meter distance, cat5 wouldn't work. Max distance is 100 meters. Using a repeater may or may not work, depending on if there's any way to have something plugged in halfway along the length of the cable.

Also, if it's going to be outside for just a few days, it wouldn't be worth the added cost of the ubiquiti cable.

Thanks for pointing out that cable though, I've been on the site a bunch of times and hadn't seen it. Looks like just what I need to wire my outdoor APs. Just hope that it's available in less than 1000ft reels.
