Is it better off to have stronger cores but of less amount (I3-4160) to play games such as minecraft and GTA V or is it better to have less powerful cores but more amount (FX-6300). Are all cores used when gaming or only the amount required?

Thanks.

Depends on the game. For the most part, stronger cores > more cores, but there are some (rare) exceptions.

The FX 6300 and i3 4160 are very equal, but not in the same games.

The FX will run supreme in games that use more, less powerful cores. (That is starting to become a thing in games)

The i3 will run supreme in games that use less but more powerful cores.

I'd get the FX if you are streaming, other than that, it really doesn't matter.

But an i5 can beat a 8350 so better upgrade path :)

Also not true.

The i5 4460 is very similar performance to a FX 8350 and costs about a 1/3rd more (or more)

The same concept applies.

i3/i5 better single core performance.

FX, better multi core performance.

I don't recommend upgrading a CPU, I recommend getting a CPU that fits your budget and when you need more, the next platform should already be out and you can buy something better.

As said before, you're currently better off by going with the FX-6300. (Since new games favour more cores over faster cores).

Just remember to get a decent cooling solution, such as the Hyper 212 or similar.

Typically it's best to get stronger cores. And Minecraft, from what I've heard, doesn't run very well on amd cpus.

A game will use a max number of cores that designers program for. Most games that use more than 4 don't fully use all the cores.

Minecraft runs pretty well on AMD CPUs, the fuck where you reading?

It's largely CPU dependent but it's GPU dependent when the card is actually being utilized

Most triple a games will actually use 4 cores, so that's about all you need these days. More than that is overkill and wasted power IMO.
