If you're comparing from the same generation, it ranges from clock speeds, to amount of cache, and the performance of the IGP.

As far as I know, all laptop core i series CPUS (besides the HQ ones) are dual core with hyperthreading. What then, is the difference between the three? Clock speed? Their spec sheets look almost identical with the exception that the i5 and i7 can turbo.

i7: Best graphics, higher clocks, HT, Turbo Boost

i5: Decent graphics, HT, Turbo Boost

i3: Lowest clocked,  HT, lower end GPU, no Turbo Boost

This is for most of the ULV chips

i5s do not have hyperthreading.

One of the main differences is the letter on the end of it. I series processors that end in an H or M are generally going to be higher wattage chips and run higher clock speeds/instructions per clock along with that as compared to processors that end in a U.

There are no "general rules" for the mobile series, except the i3 chips don't have turbo. Otherwise there's a bit of crossover between the i5 and i7 line with dual-core HTT chips in both lines, there's no "difference" other than the strongest ones are labeled "i7" and the less strong ones are labeled "i5" but there's no special difference besides the immediately apparent spec differences. There are also a few quad-core no-HTT i5's, whereas the i7 quad cores do have HTT.

The i5 4200H in my Y50 has hyperthreading....

So then what's even the point? A mobile i3 is then just a less good version of a mobile i7.

Very less good. The i5's are the sweet spot since they have turbo, and the i7's are only if you need "the most out of your device". The i3 I had(4010U) struggled with video playback, I wouldn't really recommend it unless if the use is web browsing and documents.

@OP Right now i have a Laptop with i3-5005u/4gbx2 1600MHz/GTX 920M/EVO850 250GB SSD, and for what i can tell i can do high multitasking and Indi Game Titiles most likely CSGO and Dota 2. with other title similar with those to title.

right now i have a friend with the i5-5200u/4gbx2 1600Mhz/GTX940M/EVO850 250GB SSD. and for i think he has an edge on Mobile Graphic Card. mine is 2gb and he's is 4gb.
