OK, so my friend asked me for a PC that could 3D render and run AutoCAD well and I need help with the CPU. He is on a budget of $500AUD. Repeat: this is being built within Australia. Do not take me to the US PCPartPicker site. So: budget of $500, he wants a small build (mini ITX), 16gb of RAM and a 1TB HDD. If there is any money left over, I will probably get him an SSD as well.

Here is the current build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($118.00 @ IJK)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($68.00 @ IJK)
Case: Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini ITX Tower Case  ($57.00 @ CPL Online)
Total: $243.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-11-11 09:35 AEDT+1100

Once again: this is in Australian Dollars.

Yes...he has the OS, monitor and the mouse & keyboard

Can he live without a case....the 8320 is going to be about the lowest cost CPU for productivity

the lowest cost i5 I'm seeing is for $270, probably not worth it over the FX 8 core

It's not worth it, since the socket is pretty much at the end of it's life, it's better just to spend the cash and get the highest end CPU for it, well get the 8 core for it anyways

I'd maybe look and see if you can find any used like RAM, or literally any video card, since you just need to get video output for the motherboard, maybe a cheap case as well, dunno the used market over there

What about this?

I'd drop the SSD and get an 8320

Otherwise that power supply is going to be a fire hazzard, you want something that's 80+ bronze rated or higher.

I would start with a single stick of 8GB (because of budget), unless your friend knows for sure he/she will be working with more than 2B polygons at a time.

This makes a good argument for the FX 8XXX, but your budget won't:  http://themadcadder.blogs.com/my_weblog/2013/05/is-revit-2014-muli-threaded.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Revit 2014 Muli-threaded

Is Revit 2014 multi-threaded? Answer = YES

It has been multi-threaded for many versions on the following features:

  • Vector printing
  • 2D Vector Export such as DWG and DWF
  • Rendering (4 Core Limitation lifted in Revit
    2011)
  • Wall Joins representation in plans and
    sections
  • Element Loading. Loading elements into
memory is multi-threaded, reducing view open times when elements are displayed
for the first time in the session.
  • Parallel computation of silhouette edges
(outlines of a curved surfaces) in perspective 3D views. Engaged when opening
views, changing view properties, and navigating the view and will be more
noticeable as the number and complexity of curved surfaces increases.
  • Translation of high level graphicalrepresentation of model elements and annotations into display lists optimized for given video card. Engaged when opening views, changing view properties and will be more noticeable as the number and complexity of model elements
    increases.
  • File Loading
  • Point Cloud Data Overlay

There is no other software on the market where all built-in features will support multi-thread. In other words, there is no such thing as a true 100% multi-threaded software.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seems like GPU power will be the biggest issue... next to that horrid budget.

Yeah...only just realised...I dont think he needs the 8320, hes on a budget. I was looking at an athlon, but nobody in Australia seems to sell them any more. So I ended with the 6300. This should be plenty of cores for Revit

Whats wrong with the PSU?? I have an 80+ Bronze PSu that was built into the case and it works perfectly fine

The power supply you have in the build isn't 80 plus certified, which means the components in it won't be the most reliable potentially, for most like little office PCs it will work fine, but your build is going to be used for some heavy lifting, as such the PSU is going to be stressed, so if you have a cheap power supply it may not last, or at worst it'll kill the PC

Generally 80 plus on a PSU means it has reasonable components rather than a lottery essentially

Ugh, I can't suggest really.  I mean $500 USD would be tough... $250-$300 USD is what you are really trying to do.  You are not going to have a great 3d modeling experience at this price range.

I tried.  I just could not confidently suggest any build... sorry.  :(

I can however suggest that your friend wait and save up some money for a few months.

OK...so the price has changed...can we get a build that is good for autocad and all that stuff. The budget is $500-$1000AUD, but try to keep it around $500-$700

he should aim for a Firepro W7000 or W7100... those have the horsepower to truly power ANY type of CAD load...

if he cannot, get a Firepro W5100... although they cost some, it should be closer to his budget.

then again, strailia... overpriced as fuck

@

you know some good strailian shops with cheap ass Firepros?
