The internet at my house is really bad i get like 0.6 down 1 up, apparently we are connected to the wrong exchange and are quite far away from it (i live in the UK and in the woods pretty much). So i created this network to get around it and use the 3G signal i get in only one corner of the house. This allows me to get 10-20 down and around 2 up depending on the time of day, which i am quite happy with but pings can be slow during peak hours.

My 3G sim card has an unlimited data plan but has a personal hot spot cap at 2gb so i use a jailbreak tweak to get around that. because i only get 3G in one spot of my house i have to leave the phone there on charge all the time to have a constant connection for all my other devices. Unfortunately most of downstairs is out of range of my iPhone's WiFi broadcasting capabilities. So to extend my wireless network downstairs i used a spare netgear d1500 and turned on its wireless bridge mode which has extended the network downstairs . Problem 1 with this is that i cant access the router settings once ive changed it to wireless bridge for some reason. problem 2 is that i cant get my sony home theatre sytem to work with it over ethernet, i think its because of DHCP and lack there off or maybe ethernet doesnt work when in wireless bridge mode but sonys proprietary wifi adapater is super over priced now so would rather hook it up with ethernet.

I was hoping someone a lot smarter than me could tell me im stupid and provide a better solution to my problematic setup.

Have you just tried buying a 3G modem from your provider?

you can put the sim card in there

I'm going to make a big assumption that me and @3utterfingers are both on an unlimited data plan with Three. I believe you can only get unlimited if you're using a phone for it.

I remember when they were giving away unlimited tethering data on those plans, those were the good days. My Note 3, when tethering, wouldn't count against my tethering allowance of 4GB. Now my Note 4 does.

Sig under construction.

WAIT!

USE BLUETOOTH PAN TO BROADCAST YOUR SIGNAL TO YOUR OTHER DEVICES WITH YOUR IPHONES BUILT IN BLUETOOTH THINGY

THEN YOU CAN GET ANTOTHER IPHONE (UR 6) TO BROADCAST BLUETOOTH PAN TO WIFI

IT WILL WORK

JAILBROKEN PHONES CAN DO THAT

or if you have an apple it will work in the sharing menu

I will post screenshots

I have a working connection babadocter

How does using bluetooth PAN improve my network, sorry im being slow and not following you at the minute.

Bluetooth pan can increase the connection length

lets say not even bluetooth pan

use those settings for example you can plug in your iphone 5 with 3G into your mac or hackintosh

then you can transform the 3G connection into an ethernet connection

buy a really powerful router or long ethernet cord

success

BEFORE ALL OF THIS PHONE MUST BE PLUGGED IN AND SELECT SHARE CONNECTION THROUGH USB (TETHERING)

step 1. turn it on (internet sharing)

step 2. Select your phone in the dROPDOWN MENU

step 3. select ethernet and wifi

step 4. Plug ethernet cord from your hackintosh or macbook pro INTO YOUR ROUTER (THE THING YOU BOUGHT, YOU KNOW THE BRIDGER? IT CAN SERVE AS A ROUTER RIGHT?)

step 6. Plug router into ethernet port with long long long ethernet cord

step 7. IT WORKS!

it only says android because android is my android device (it should say iOS or apple device)

To be exact it could be either http://techsupport.dension.com/index.php?/DigitalSignage/Knowledgebase/Article/View/48/8/what-are-pan-and-dun

Pan or Dun

Dun it might be because you are using a 3G connection

ah i see yeah that makes sense now.

I dont have a mac so would have to build a hackintosh. Also i should of mentioned that i have to put my phone on a windows sill on my landing upstairs yo get a decent 3g connection so cant have a usable computer there really.

There are iphone tweaks to get around this maybe there is one for android im not sure. The iphone tweak i use is called TetherMe and it has an option to "override data source" which makes it look like the data im using is from my phone.

Interesting setup. You should consult with the Router manual

Is there anything stopping you from removing the SIM and putting it in to a 3G router? Sure it's not allowed but is there any technical/security block they have done to actually stop you?

What about plugging the phone in to a computer and internet connection sharing via usb. Then on the ethernet connection also enable internet connection sharing and plug in to the netgear. This would get rid of the wireless bridge and hopefully fix the DHCP issue.

Not exactly a nice way of setting it up but your not really in the best situation as it is so options are rather limited. Are there any long range wireless internet providers in your area?

Edit: Just saw your reply about having to put the phone on the window sill so that rules out my suggestion. And I see it as already been suggested too anyway. You can do it on windows, just need iTunes installed. http://www.howtogeek.com/213203/how-to-use-your-iphone%E2%80%99s-hotspot-or-a-usb-cable-for-tethering/

Yes i imagine i would get capped by my personal hotspot limit of 2gb. i use the tetherme tweak on my iphone to get around this.

Yeah a computer on the window sill isnt the best solution but might have to put up with if i want ethernet downstairs.

Just had an idea. Could i get another router and connnect its WAN ethernet port to the wireless bridge via ethernet cable? would DHCP be a problem? because im pretty sure it turns off when turning on wireless bridge mode.

You should be able to use a wireless extender (example: http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-Wi-Fi-Range-Extender-TL-WA850RE/dp/B00E98O7GC/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1447264298&sr=1-3&keywords=wireless+repeater&pebp=1447264305505&perid=0338DNNZ6YV50MEBTXJ1) and connect the ethernet port of the extender into the WAN port of a router.

  • 3 weeks later...

Using the TP Repeater now and also got a network switch.

Ran into a new problem though which i didnt think would come up. The max connections on my iphone's personal hotspot is 5 the TP link counts as 1 and everything that connects to that counts as 1. So my computer is connected to an ethernet switch which is connected to the tp link and that counts as 2 connections on my iphone. When i add the netgear router downstairs in wireless bridge mode that is another connection and anything that connects to that adds up. Obviously i need more to connect everything in my home. Is there anything i can do or have i come to brick wall here?

Also when i turn my netgear D1500 into wireless bridge mode i cant connect to its config page anymore and its not very consistent when it comes to connecting the internet.

Appreciate the help.
