Hey all, I've decided it's about time I learn how to build my own gaming rig and plan to give it a shot in the very near future (2-3 weeks). I have a budget of around £1000 and I have a rough idea of what I want in my system and what I want it to be able to handle but I'm not quite sure if I've got it right.

I want a rig that can support close to max graphic gaming on games such as, BF4, GTA5, and many other games that will be released over the next few years. I would also like to run multiple instances of WoW(5+). Ideally I'd like to overclock the CPU to around 4.4/4.5 GHz however I'm not sure if the CPU cooler can keep it cool enough. The idea behind the PSU is that I probably will want to SLi in the future, maybe a year from now, and I thought that this PSU could support it. I was also not sure which motherboard I wanted to use so hopefully I can get some advice from the 2 I have listed or maybe even some other alternative. There were also 2 HDDs which I could not differentiate so hopefully someone can enlighten me and tell me what the difference between the 2 are and explain the price difference. I only have 8GB of RAM at the moment simply because of a lack of funds and I plan to increase the amount in the near future. I'll be using a 24" monitor at 1920x1080 resolution and I plan to add another in the future so I'd like the system to be able to handle it.

The spec is as follows:

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl Case

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI HERO Z87 Socket 1150 HDMI ATX Motherboard/Asus Sabertooth Z87 Socket 1150 HDMI DisplayPort 8-Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K 3.50GHz Socket 1150 8MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC12DX CPU Cooler

Memory: Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz Vengeance Memory

GPU: Asus GTX 760 Direct CU II 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

PSU: Corsair 750W HX 80PLUS Gold Modular PSU

SSD: Samsung 120GB 840 Series SSD

HDD: WD 1TB Black Desktop Drive/WD 1TB Caviar Black Internal Hard Drive (would love if someone could explain the difference to me)

I feel pretty confident about putting it together, although I'm pretty concerned about where I want to put each fan, how I want to align them and in which direction they should be pushing/pulling. I'm open to any suggestions and any advice about the fans in particular would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Drop the i7 to i5 to save some cash. Used said cash for higher end GPU. Consider 7970 due to it's extremely low price.

Use front two and bottom fan as intake. Face all Heatsink fans towards rear fan and have rear fan as exhaust. Leave top moduvents (or whatever they're called) on. Pick whichever drive is cheaper.

That cooler is good, but have you also considered a Silver arrow or a NHD14? Any of the three would be acceptable, but I urge you to compare between the three anyway. Stick with WD if you can, I like them more. Also choose memory based on price as long as they're <1.5v, CL9, and 1600. Corsair RAM is often overpriced.

Any particular reason for picking such a high end mobo?

EDIT: Nevermind, I thought it was much more expensive.

if this is just for gaming just get an i5, get an 840 evo drive, just get a seagate barracuda it's like $30 and no real difference(if i remember right WD and seagate drives are made in the same factories) My preference on the power supply is the xfx 80+ gold 750w mostly because of the fully modular and slightly better internals.

Any reasoning behind running 5 instances of wow? Might need more than 8 gigs then? I'm not a wow guy.

A 7950 could run BF4 ultra at 1080P with 60 or near Fps and with the 9000 series coming out discounts mean crossfire will be much cheaper than now.

I'm not too brushed up on the NVIDIA gpus however but the 760 is a solid card from what I've heard. The 7950 is also cheaper.

If you reply back to me ill report my findings.

EDIT: the 8 core form AMD is actually way better because its about 30 to 40 pounds cheaper.

I would recommend getting a larger cpu cooler. More fins, the better and extra cooling capacity is really, really good to have for overclocking.

i5 instead of an i7 is a smart move.

Seagate Barracudas are your friend, they are good drives. But for HDDs, I still highly recommend RAID 1 configs, no matter the brand. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148844)

Corsair memory is often overpriced and overvalued if you ask me, but not bad. You can find 16GB 1600mhz kits for less than that 8GB kit.

Maybe you might want to find a PLATINUM rated PSU? It isn't a necessity, but it is an option if you didn't know that that was a thing.  ;)

It is hard to go wrong with SSDs nowadays, but 120GB or more, so you're good. But do note, it isn't a good idea to install games on SSDs. Hell, I run my massive collection of Steam games off a 1.5TB USB 3.0 2.5" external drive, works like a charm!

There's no difference between the two hdds. It's just that one comes with a kit and the other is just the drive.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I was just wondering would I be able to run a single stick of RAM? The reason being because I want to add another stick a couple weeks later when I can afford it, and I don't want to eliminate the possibility of going to 32GB of RAM. Just curious if it will actually function. I see no reason why not but better to be safe than sorry. Also curious if in a years time that PSU will be able to support the latest GPU? If someone could tell me if the price difference between the two mobos I linked is worth it would greatly be appreciated <3

Thanks again!

1 Stick works fine but why would you need 32GB of ram? 16GB is more than enough for most people.

Nobody can tell the future but the psu will probably be fine with future psus unless for some odd reason, everyone suddenly changes the standard.

You haven't linked any mobos.
