So I insert my sd card into the card reader and transfer the files to my pc. All of a sudden, once I ejected the SD card, I get this error (Attached). Can I recover this somehow?

If you ejected the sd card then it would act like it is 'unpluged' so that you can remove it. So it would not be accessible by the computer unless you take it out and put it back in again

Its possible you copied the location of the files and not the actual files themselves

There are ways but they are very difficult. Youd have to delve into basic digital forensics, and probably use some random linux distro like CAINE forensics. I learnt a little but about it at university but cant remember much on how its done.

This is very important! Don't write anything to the card from now on. A single bit might foil all attempts. So only read.

Don't recover to the SD but only from it. So when you're prompted for a folder to recover to, pick one on your computer, not on the card. Recover everything you can and sort though it later on. The metadata, like the original filename might already be irrecoverably lost.

 

The way flash media (such as an SD card) works can be troublesome for recovery softwares. It's way easier to recover fom a mechanical HDD. But it's definitely possible to recover in your situation. Also the success rate depends on other factors like was it encrypted, compressed or otherwise jumbled. Some filesystems are easier than others. This is just to say that what works for someone, might not work for someone else and what works for you might not work for me and so on. Also the best software is often paid.

 

But I'd suggest trying Recuva. Based on the assumption that the file was a JPG and it's not that long ago since you lost it.
