Hello there to all of you forum users. I am planning a storage server. I need suggestions for components.

I would recommend making a list with the component types or using a website like PCPartPicker.

Here are my requirements for it:

  • I need a dark color range of components
  • I need space for at least 5 drives and 4 ssds
  • I need to be able to access it, whether on the web or on a network
  • I need it to process and handle things well
  • I want Xeon, and an Nvidia GPU
  • I only want 1 CPU and 1 GPU
  • I need support for 32-64 GB RAM
  • I need support for Windows 10 Pro
  • I need to use 3 monitors, 2 of which need to have the same type of video connection (HDMI or DVI-D)
  • I need the monitors to be at least 1080p and consist of LG, Samsung, Asus, Dell, or HP; so the same 2 need the same brand
  • I need it to be flat and/or a rackmount or a tower
  • I need to see each drive's activity
  • I want to incorporate gigabit switches, etc.
  • I need good speakers
  • I need a good sound card that is Asus
  • I need an ATX board, with DDR4 RAM support, etc
  • I need an efficient power supply that corresponds with the rest of the components
  • I need efficient cooling and possibly some tiny fans, but otherwise 120mm, etc.

So if any of you guys out there have any ideas, please reply to this with your suggestions

Thank you!

why do you need a GPU?

why do you want 32-64gb ram?

why are you using win 10 pro?

why do you need good speakers and a sound card for a storage server >_>

I'm confused. Why do you need all this for a storage server? What exactly are you using it for?

I need a gpu for the monitors that will go with it. I need ram for applications on the server. I am using Windows 10 Pro for application support for the software my team has created. I need good speakers and a sound card because it is essential to said software.

so you want a workstation with file-sharing support?  cause you'd be better off building a small NAS and a super fast separate workstation then having a single unit from my experience.  @QueenDemetria would probably disagree; she has her NAS running within ubuntu (without a VM) along with other server apps.  I'm not greatly familiar with Windows 10's file transfer capabilities though...

You can edit the list if you want. I need to upload data to it for several other PCs across a network. I'm sorry for the confusion.

I am confused. A storage server doesn't need speakers and monitors. And it doesn't need much ram unless you have dozens of terabytes of data.

It sounds like you just need a workstation. Not a server?

Not trying to be rude, just trying to understand what you actually need.

I think what OP needs is a workstation, storage server doesn't need GPU, lots of RAM or soundcard at all

Please get your fact straight

What I need is basically space for my team's files and to see those files on the server and interact with the OS. I need a server, not a workstation, because it would be connected to not only our network but our clients.

You don't need to address me as OP when you can just reply to a post of mine. Also my plan has its differences from the occasional build, so there is no reason for "Please get your fact straight". If you do have ideas, please clearly depict them. Thank you.

No, not a workstation, I just need support for connection from clients. That is why it is a server.

then why the monitors and soundcard?  Is this a dedicated server?

Can you describe in depth what you will be running on this server? Folks will not be able to determine what is an appropriate setup without that information.

For example, you may not need much RAM, but need alot more CPU horsepower. Likewise, you may need a decent PCIe raid card to support needed storage speeds. Maybe you need ECC ram, because you are doing critical items. Maybe you need a workstation GPU instead of a consumer GPU. Maybe you don't actually need any GPU. NICs are also a consideration, depending on your environment and needs.

-snip-

Since you are building a storage server, i would recommend the following:

  1. Monitors and GPU are completely unnecessary for a true storage server...iKVM/IPMI is all you need
  2. Win10 is not a storage server OS...use Server 2012 R2 or a linus flavor
  3. Sound and speakers are unnecessary for a storage server...it will cost extra for no need?

It seems like you want a workstation with file sharing capability not a storage server.
