Do not put a laptop hard drive in a pc because their slower than you think

Laptop HDD are no different in performance than a fullsize HDD. Were did you get this info?

Current 2.5inch HDD run around 5400rpm - 7200rpm and utilize Sata3 connections so you should be fine using them in your system.  Form factor has no relevance in performance between 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives.

The one thing you need to look out for is that you are changing your mobo and the OS will not like this.

*edit

The biggest difference between the sizes is power draw that's it.

read this.

*edit 2

Fixed my rpm number I typo'd  ;)

I think it's cause the laptops i use aren't really new so it probably varies depending on the laptop and it's hard drive

I'm getting ready to do the same thing. Is the license void once you replace the motherboard a certain number of times?

One OEM version of windows (XP,Vista,7,8 & 10) is a one time use for one motherboard, non-transferable to another mobo.

The Win10 upgrade is an OEM version so you wont be able to transfer it to another mobo.

You will have to either;

1) purchase another copy of Win10 for about $199.99 USD

2) purchase another copy of Win7 for which there are legit key resellers out there for $30-$40 USD and then free upgrade to Win10

I have done exactly what your asking and have transferred my HDD from an ASUS ROG G75VW that died to my recent build (see my signature it has the drives listed)

and they work flawlessly. I had to buy a new key for my Win7 as it was OEM but I payed $32 for it (legit).

When you say OEM, is that referring to the license that comes with prebuilt machines?

Yes mostly.

Microsoft also sells both versions (OEM & Retail) to the public, you can usually tell by its price point $100 for OEM (single system install) and $199.99 (multi system up to 5 installations).

OEM versions registers itself with the hardware ie motherboard when it validates the license.

Retail versions registers itself buy the number of installations its has under gone, keeping a record of each mobo installed with on MS servers tied to the key that came with the purchase.

Ok gotchya. Mine cost $100 when I bought it. I replaced the motherboard once and the activation is still valid. Do you know how many times this works exactly?

I transfered my OEM licenses between several machines.

You can try it as many time as you want until the MS server catches it and tells you its no good.

But technically according to the license agreement of OEM its only a one time use.
