Hello, I currently am running windows 7 on a lenovo x220 I bought used from a guy. I am trying to upgrade to windows 10. When I use the media creation tool like it says on the Microsoft website, I chose the "Upgrade this PC" option. It goes trough and downloads windows 10 and gets it all ready. Then it prompts me for an activation key and does not give me the option to skip this step.

It says on this screen "Windows isn't activated on this PC. This means you'll need to enter the Windows 10 product key below or exit setup, activate Windows, and then try again. The product key should be with the DVD that came in the box or on your email receipt. When you connect to the Internet, We'll activate it for you."

How do I fix this so I can upgrade to 10?

Thanks

Follow the guide in my signature.

Install the original OS that came with the machine, using the original product key.

Then upgrade to 10, then activate.  Let it sit for about 10 minutes so it can make sure it attaches it to your Microsoft account.

Then do a clean install of 10 to avoid any future headaches.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

I do not have the original product key.

If your PC came with a version of windows, you can use the OEM version to reinstall the original OS and it will "autoactivate", meaning you need no key. You can check OPTION 1 in my reinstalling windows guide in my signature for help!

Check the underside of your laptop. If the PC came with an OEM Windows 7 License, then you will see a sticker with the Product key. If not, you may have a counterfeit copy of Windows installed.

Ive seen product keys under the battery as well. You should not need it if you have OEM reinstall disks (which you can find online) but the laptop should have that sticker somewhere!
