The goal here is to make the fastest and most reliable computer possible (without overspending) for everyday use.

A graphics card isn't in the parts list because it's not a gaming machine, so I decided to go with onboard graphics.

All prices are in AUD.

CPU Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual Core ($174)

Motherboard Gigabyte S1151 GA-B150M-D3H DDR4 MicroATX ($149)

RAM 2 x 4GB Crucial 2133MHz DDR4 ($98)

SSD Samsung 120GB 850 Evo ($99)

DVD LG DVD Writer ($24)

Case CoolerMaster RC-344 Elite MicroATX ($59)

PSU Corsair 650W CS650M 80Plus Gold ($139)

OS Windows 8.1 64-bit ($139)

TOTAL COST = $881

I'm just wondering whether going to a kit of G.Skill Ripjaws V 2400MHz would be better in any way, and there are also H170 motherboards for a bit extra but I'm not sure if they offer any tangible benefits.

The PSU is overkill but I can't get hold of any PSUs with outputs of less than 500W...

Get an EVGA SuperNova G2 instead!

Nah, the CS is perfect for his needs, but 650 is away overkill for his needs, I would say 350-450w is perfect

Early 2020 Build : Intel i7 8700k // MSI Krait Z370 // Corsair LPX 8x2 16GB // Aorus 5700 XT // NZXT H500

Early 2019 Build : Ryzen 2600X // Asus Tuff X470 // G.Skill Trident Z RGB 8x2 16GB // MSI RTX 2070 // NZXT H500

Late 2017 Build : Intel i7 8700k // Asus Prime Z370-A // G.Skill Trident Z 8x2 16GB // EVGA GTX 1080 Ti  // NZXT S320 Elite

Late 2015 Build : Intel i7 6700k // Asus Maximus VI Gene Z170 //  Corsair LPX 8x2 16GB // Gigabyte GTX 970 // Corsair Air 240

EVGA does seem good, for some reason they're thin on the ground around here. I haven't been in a computer store that has ever sold a single EVGA product, which is pretty weird considering they're so popular in the US.

There's a 420W generic PSU available from the store I'm going through, but it'd probably average out at 65% efficiency.

Otherwise I can't find a single PSU below 500W.

Australia, my aim is to keep the build under AU$1000.

Actually a B2 would be a better idea, not as good as a G2 though but as cheaper and better than a CS

I never said you forced him to get one, I'm just saying he won't be gaming so it's worthless..
