Hello , today I bought a GTX 970 Strix used, but that had never been used , had the plastics and all.
Installed everything right drivers installed , I was testing the Unigine and the thing coil whines ... Only in ungine , tested in Diablo and didnt make noise, but in the Unigine does, and some ... Temperatures not pass the 65 with fans in Auto, but has some coil whine ... What do I do? Send to the warranty? I'm afraid to OC ... If I OC and this makes more coil whine ... -.-

I would appreciate some opinions! Thank you

Why did I study Haskell?

If I'm right most companies don't count coil whine as a fault?

Why does it matter if it coil whines in Unigene and nowhere else?  Not like you're gonna be playing the benchmark...

coil whine is random and can happen to any GPU

it is not a defect so you cannot RMA because of coil whine

there is just as much chance as any other GPU of having coil whine

if you get a different one it might even coil whine more

If it's under warranty you might be able to RMA it, I'm not sure what the policy is with second hand devices though.

coil whine is normal and there is nothing you can do about it

Really? Its not that loud, just not used to it... I had a r9 270, it was so silent, but i wanted more power :/

send it back and get a sapphire 390...

I bought it second hand, I just have the warranty thing, I can try to RMA, just that. I replaced an AMD card for this, because I wanted Nvidia, didnt really like my experience with AMD cards, trully the r9 270 didnt coil whine, always silent, but i wanted more power, and that a 550Watt power supply could handle

send it back and get an evga or msi card

As i said, cant, bought in second hand... (but it was brand new, the dude never used it)

Its the same, because i have the buying proof, I dont know how it is said in English, but in portuguese its "Recibo", so i can just go to the store and claim that it has problems and as I present the "recibo" I prove that i bought it, so its like I bought it in the store, but not really

dont worry, coilwhine is a common issue, it wont affect your performance or anything. its just annoying.

According to the RMA page for Asus if you go with an RMA directly through them if they accept coil whine as a valid thing all you need is the serial number, but I've never gone through it so I'm not 100% sure.

It'd be worth trying out all the games you play with it and see if any of them make the card whine, if it's only one benchmark doing it then there's no point

OP said they bought it secondhand, so more than likely they didn't pay full price for the thing. I don't know what makes you think they can just get a refund like that and buy a 390 outright. You guys need to stop with randomly recommending people send back what they got and get something else. That's fucking dumb, especially if the OP bought something secondhand.

Thanks for the help!

Another thing, I know its out of topic, but in GPU Tweak the gpu Clock is limited to 1400MHZ, wtf? How can i take this limit out?

I wouldn't mess with that if you're getting coil whine in Unigine, unless you wanna deal with the noise.

I don't know much about GPU tweak so I couldn't tell you how to unlock the clock speed slider, but I know EVGA Precision and MSI Afterburner are pretty straight forward on stuff like that and are easier to use.

I try to avoid Asus software as best as I can, as I'm sure everyone else who builds computers all the time do.

wot

Bruh, he bought it used from someone, which is the problem I have with you guys saying they should get a different, more expensive card.

He hasn't refunded it, least they haven't yet.

Meh, it's moreso that it's a Strix card rather than it being a 970

hopefully it's just coil whine

Im playing GTA, not maxed out, cant get 60fps with everything max, but playing fine (but coil whine is there. Headset solves the problem), but firestrike finished and my pc had 9k, so I think its just fine. And I OCd it too, getting 1489MHZ stable with no voltage added :D and I dont think I will add voltage, dont really like it! Coil whine is not increasing with the OC, and just the games that are heavy get it to coil whine, for now is what I can deduce! And temps rounding the 64-65 Celsious under full load.

Yeah, I always used MSI's software, but I tryed GPUTweak. Didnt work out, back to afterburner, OC running fine. Good that the coil whine doesnt increase with the OC, btw my PSU, XFX TS 550 is a good PSU for this right? I guess it is, but I dont want to commit any risks
