Is it reliable so it will last a few years?

Is MSI a reliable motherboard manufacturer?

It's a good motherboard :) It's up there with ASUS motherboards.

If you were to pick any z97 lga 1150 motherboard that's ATX, what would it be?

Thats a hard question,

It depends on budget, personal preference in fan controllers/pci ports/sata ports, whether a onboard sound card has to be good or not, m.2 requirement...

Give me a criteria and I can answer it better for you.

between 4-6 sata ( i don't care for express )

at least 2 way sli

not really too concerned with case fan # because I have pwm splitters.

I care about reliability more than anything else.

atx form factor.

great audio.

doesn't break the bank too much

Where are you from? That way I can find a cheaper retailer.

Southern California ( USA ). NewEgg is pretty local and amazon, too.

This is the cheapest board that includes all your criteriums.

If you want a bit more build quality you're looking at about 30 bucks more for this one.

Yeah, I was thinking about going with gigabyte, too. I heard they have some pretty solid mobos. Thanks for your time and enjoy the rest of your evening :D

Its subjective, MSi does less shady business than gigabyte (revision bullshit) and tend to be in the medium-end of the Motherboard segment.

ASUS is probably the most solid altough most expensive brand.

I just hear such nasty horror stories with their tech support now, which greatly saddens me since I have been using Asus boards in a lot of builds for the last 20 years or so.

The MSI Z97 Gaming 5 is a such a well-designed board. I love the fan header locations, the side facing SATA ports, and the side facing USB 3.0. I can't understand why all Z series boards aren't designed that way, as pretty much anyone spending on Z series parts is going to have a modern case with cables routed behind the motherboard tray so that the side facing ports would make the most sense. The only thing I don't like about the board is the Killer LAN instead of Intel LAN.

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal, everybody atleast has issues with some brand's way of support.

I do appreciate you sharing your experience though.

I don't have bad experiences with their boards, but the I haven't bought one in a few years. But this thread makes their tech support sound shady:

And with all the corners they cut on the R9 290/290x, with the bad things I hear about the Strix 970, you just start to wonder if Asus is still the great company they once were.

Damn unlucky guy, and yeah their R9 290X's sucked ass. Especially those ROG matrix bla bla cards.

What happened with the 970's though? I did hear something about coil whine but I heard the G1's had that too so.

I remember lots of complaints about the power limit here, everyone seemed to blame the 8-pin PCIE instead of dual 6-pin PCIE like on lots of other 970s.

Hearing the bent pin excuse though is pretty unforgivable. I have heard of them claiming bent pins a lot of times before which is probably why that guy took photos and video first.
