VMWare and Viruses

I am running programs that I think may be affected with viruses on it. I am running it on a virtual machine, the file saves to an external hard drive to make sure nothing affects my main pc. Is there any chance that the virus could effect my main PC?

except some can.

It is possible for it to attack other network devices and since they are in the same network, it is possible but doubtful
