GPU temp sensor malfunction?

I have a GTX 550 ti and I think the GPU temp sensor is broken.

I was recently playing Euro Truck sim 2 and noticed stuttering and lag.

When I went to go check in MSI Afterburner if everything is ok I noticed the temperature was hitting a max of 42* C (normally at 75* C max at this game) with 100% load.

During idle the temps drop to around 35* C (around 55* C normal).

 

I don't know if it's just a temporary malfunction or if it is a more serious problem....

Reboot the PC - if it persists, then the sensor might be dead.

Just rebooted - nothing helped.....either the sensor is dead or there is a communication error between the GPU and Windows.

Weird thing is that I noticed this when my game suddenly went black (only 1 monitor - I have two set up)

could be a dying sensor/card :/

The card is 6 years old....but it was never overclocked and I keep my system clean and ect. :(

I'm afraid that my current cpu will bottleneck a new gpu (like a GTX 960 that I was planning to buy) and I can't afford to buy a new system

I had the exact same CPU before - you could get away with a 750 Ti or R7 370

Looks like the TEMP sensor has somehow fixed itself xD
